If the weather cooperated, I'm off today to do 4 college games in 22 hours (two this afternoon/evening, and two tomorrow morning) in two different states. They've put GPS on officials and figure that they cover about 6 miles in a game, so that will put me at about 24 miles. If I go jog another 2.2 miles, that will give me a Marathon!

wait, so you're saying that over the course of a game, a ref runs 6 miles?

Get one of those things that counts your steps and see how many you do over the course of all the games. Good luck LaxRef!

I believe that the refs at the 2006 World Games wore GPS units and heart monitors, so that their locations and heart rates could be tracked throughout the games. The resulting statistics about total distance covered, speed at any time, amount of time standing around, etc. is pretty interesting.
At any rate, at that level of play with a lot of clearing and no stalling, a ref will run a long way to always be in position. I don't recall that the total distance was 6 miles, but it is certainly between 4 and 5.
I wore a pedometer for a one-sided 3-man NCAA Div III game several years ago and figured that I logged over 3 miles.

We don't run the whole way, but in a college game (60 minutes, as opposed to 48 in HS) that's about how far we cover. A crewmate GPSed himself in a game recently and got 5.7 miles.

LR - How did it go?
I had 4 college games in a week earlier this season and was sore for a couple of days. I'm relatively young (38) and in good shape.
How were your mechanics in game 4??

It went really well. The Saturday games ended up being 3-man, so that helped. My mechanics stayed sharp, and I hustled all the way through all of the games; that off-season conditioning reallyhelped, although I am a bit sore today.
Overall, it was a lot of fun.

My record is 14 games in 2 days, (they were of the STARZ variety, 1 hour games) but that's about 7 full games. Of course the last game (championship) went into overtime. My question is how many games can a Lacrosse Official do in 1 year? In California with All Star programs and Tournaments I think a 100 game year is possible.

I did about 8 youth/MS games in February - 1st week in March and have about 50 HS CIF games scheduled this year from March 4th through April 30th. An average week is 3 - double headers. Next week, I have 4 double headers, two a day from Tuesday - Friday. I have to take Saturday off and rest and stretch because my legs are toast by the end of the week. But, I have drop at least 10-15 lbs since the first week in March, so I can't complain much.
