I was trying to explain a lacrosse rule we in effect when I played in the 1970's. I think it went like this:

If you were man down and you got the ball and moved it into the attack box, your penalized player was released. I don't remember if it released :30 and :60 second penalties or only the :30's.

Does anyone remember? And when did it change?

Thanks.

I remember it. I also remember the brief interlude when a scored-upon team got a clear, not a face off.

I have no clue when all that changed. I was apparently disengaged with the game when that happened.

the no faceoff season was either 79 or 80.

the release rule was still in effect in the early 90s, and when i started coaching in 2000, it was gone. as i remember it, both technicals and personals would release.

The no face off rule was in place in '79, as it helped me get into college. Everyone wanted a 220 pound defender who ran like a DI strong safety. I believe that it was put into place because some Angel names Radebaugh at Hopkins won every face off so THAT particular unfairness had to be countered.

I don't recall the rule ever being changed before I hung up my cleats for a while in '83. On the other hand, I don't recall much from those years, so I welcome an authoritative word on this.

one can still find the 'release your penalty' rule in effect every July for super masters and grand masters tournaments in Vail.....good fun.
