I've been reading through all of my e-mails, but can't locate where I had seen the NCAA update saying that if we have a call for touching the strings that takes away a goal that we don't do any more checks in that instance.
Had a recent college game where of the first four stick checks we did on one team, three turned up illegal sticks; one had a head about 9.5" long, and the other two were Wittlesbergers where the ball doesn't come out and you can walk it to the table upside down.
On the last one, it was the goal scorer and we removed the goal from the board. The coach was insisting that if it was an illegal stick penalty where a goal was taken off the board that it is only a 1-min NR. I said no, and went to resume the game. A few seconds later I hear a double-horn, and explain that that is a high-school rule only. Since I was by the box anyway, I explained again that he was confused, that the message about a 1-minute NR was only if the scoring player grabbed his strings after a goal, but that if he didn't, and we check his stick and find it illegal (ball withheld) that a 3 min NR is assessed and the goal is taken off the board.
He then said "Ive never seen so many stick checks in a game!" I replied - "Coach, by rule how many are we supposed to do in a game?" He didn't want to answer, and ended with - "You don't have to always go by the rulebook!"
Ironically, he is one of my HS/MS officials when the college season is done.
