Team A is man up with 3 seconds remaining in the quarter, 20 seconds left in the penalty, dead ball. The official blows his whistle to start play. The player runs and then drops the ball team B picks the ball up. The officials realize that roughly 10 seconds have gone by. They blow the whistle to end play realizing the clock did not run therefore there was no way of telling who or if anybody was in posession of the ball when the quarter ended.

What do you do?

If it is the last quarter, then leave the field quickly!!

Otherwise, in the absence of conclusive evidence of possession when the clock expired, I would face off to start the next period.

In an ideal world, Team A would be the home team, so that any complaint could be answered by "If your scorer had been awake, then there would be no problem."

1. Yell at your partner for not having the timer count down the last 10 seconds.

2. Take your best guess at who had possession after 3 seconds had gone by and signal possession accordingly.

3. Between periods, move your car closer and pointing out of the parking space.

Or you pretent that anybody who thinks that roughly 10 seconds are over is wrong and you blow the whistle exactly when the period ended.

However, I think the easiest call to sell is: face off. (because you can tell Team B, that you where in the act of blowing the whistle when he picks up the ball. and team A that he drops it before the 3 sec.)

I know that this is a "what do we do now..." thread, but any time there is a visual game clock all officials should attempt to glance up to ensure the clock starts whenever possible. Especially official(s) facing the clock, and double especially towards the end of the period.
