what do you guys think makes the biggest differenece when its clutch time?
the skills to know what to do
or
that second gear your mind goes into forcing you to go on and win. that overdrive where nothing else matters
im going with determination because i can keep up with guys that have been playing 3 years longer than me and ive only been playing for a year so all i got is determination.
but obviously having skills is just as good being able to do everything perfectly is an incredible thing to do.
but what do you guys think makes the biggest difference?

they go hand in hand if you need to score a goal you need the accuracy to score, but you need to want it bad to get what you want

on the west coast our skills arnt as good as the east coast. the drive and athleticism however is there. at camps i have beat kids far superior to me on the techinal aspects because they do not push. i think if you want it enough it makes up for lacking the skill...well to some point

i see all these kids before the game with their fancy equipment and nice stick skills and everyone thinks theyre mad good until the game starts. some of them are sooooo lazy. i mean our team killed glen ridge 17-5this week and theyre stick skills were bettter but they couldnt run although they showed athletic potential they are sooo slow because they have no ethic.

Guts, fight, determination, commitment, balls whatever you want to call it these things will certainly help you to win. There is no substitute for having the right mindset. If you want it more than your opposite number you can come out on top even if he has silky stick skills or a couple of years experience over you. Its this want to succeed that will drive you to run when you have nothing left, to be 1st to that ground ball in the last 5 minuets of the 4th quarter and sprint back to defend cancelling a fast break. At the lower end of English lacrosse the will to win is everything!!! Its something I preach every week before during and after every match. Get your mindset right and you are half way to a win before you have stepped foot on the field.

I'd say determination. I mean that assumes that you have SOME skill to back up your mad dog ways, but when it comes down to it, the guy who yells: "GIVE ME THE *BLEEPING* BALL!" with the game on the line is the one who has the testicular fortitude to get it done.

I agree with shifty but if you can't catch or throw you can't do anything, so like shifty said, you have to have some skill to back up your determination.

well you just brought up a different point. running and endurance is an aquired SKILL. I believe that skill is the base for anything else. If you need a goal and get raped when you have the ball, dont think that you will suddenly beat the defender because you WANT to score. He DOESNT WANT you to score. I also hate to say that will doesnt help because i know that i have been in situations where effort set me apart from the rest and my skills we inferior so. . .

i am the player who hasd thr stick skills pretty naturally but not the whole running thinkg. i haver the determination as shifty said, i will always be the one to want the ball the most. i thinkits lots of skills but if you arent determined to win you cant win at all

I'd rather have determination.

of course you need good skills but its the mental attribute that will give you the extra shine...

i think its a mixture of both. The skilled person without the determination goes no where. and yet you may be as determined as ever but if you lack skill you wont get past anyone that has the skill.

if you really have that much determination to win games the you would practice a lot. thats why normally kids who are really determined are the best on the team, unless there newbies who dont play a lot.

determination. if your talking about the "clutch time", you also have to talk about the endless hours of practice it took to get you thier. Without the drive or faithful practice, a kid with alot of talent/skill will eventually crumble to kids that live on the lacrosse field. This goes for anything, not just lacrosse

maybe i misunderstood the question but i am saying that when it comes down to the game winning play, the person with the most skill will usually get it done. determination has a lot to do with how he developed the skill, but if you lack skill, there is little to no chance that you will make that play.

you need to have both. the determination to and confidence to take you were your goin, and the skills to actually do it
