NFHS - Big game coming up, lots of "history" between the coaches and teams. My partner and I meet in the parking lot for pre-game 45 minutes before game time. We head to the field, and as we look out we notice the visiting team is starting to warm up - with white jerseys on. Home team is warming up wearing - you guessed it - white jerseys. Home has gold scrimmage vests on over their white jerseys, with no numbers. This does not look like fun.
Visiting coach says his dark jerseys did not come in yet. Anyway, visitors wear light colors (third game of the season). Home coach says he does not have any dark jerseys at the field, and that of course home wears light jerseys.
The rules (1-9-G-7) say Home has light colors, visiting dark, and visiting is responsible for avoidance of similar colors, but, if there is a doubt, referee may require the home team to change jerseys.
What does THAT mean?
Is there a penalty? If so, what is it?
We ended up with the home team wearing the scrimmage vests, which made the game difficult to call " Gold - This guy - Slash - 1-minute".

That's a pretty bad rule. The onus is on the visiting team to obey it, but if they are in violation its up to the other team to remedy it... And don't even talk about enforcement. "Visiting gets an IP technical for not bringing the right jerseys. Home gets an IP technical too if they don't change their jerseys to contrasting colours." Try selling that :whyme:

It actually makes sense, in a way. The visiting team is required to wear dark colored jerseys, so they get the penalty. The home team, being home, has better access to its facilities, so it's easier to make the home team change than to make the visiting team go home and change.

But then it doesn't make sense because there's essentially no penalty.
One way to read this is the the home team is "required" to change jerseys. No penalty for not changing, we just aren't playing the game if you don't do it.

Well here we often have the problem, that a Team has no jersys so they often play with scrimmage vests what is really annoying for the ref (slash on aehh you , ...)
but however, I think If there are no safety problems: "play the game" I think this should be something like a prime rule, that the game should be played if possible eaven under bad circumstances. In field hockey (int. rules) there is a rule, that if no ref shows up the teams will nominate two "spectators" or the coaches or two players as Ref, so do whatever to do to..

In these situations, I will sometimes say, "Yeah, it might not have been you that had the slash, but it was on your team and you're going to serve the penalty."
Jerseys are considered to be important safety gear since they keep the shoulder pads in place. We are not allowed to let teams play in vests.

That would be a huge safety issue, putting clueless spectators out there to officiate a contact sport.
Let me ask you this: would you allow the game to be played if there were no lines on the field? That's not really a safety issue, but those lines are fundamental to the game. So is being able to tell which team is which. Couple that with the fact that I know damn well that home team has different jerseys sitting in the school 50 yards away, and I wouldn't feel bad making that threat.

Lax is still a club sport here, and there are no dark jerseys at the school. The school does not let the team use any facilities except the field - no locker rooms. No jersey storage room.
The home team wore their scrimmage vests over the home jersey - no safety problem.
I think the rules should stop at "vistors wear dark, home wears light." That way if visitors show up in light, it is like the home not having crease lines.
