it seems like everytime theres a ground ball the refs call away from the ball push. i never knew there was such a call before. and its not like its only our team either they call it on both teams. is this just one retartded ref or is this something that gets called a lot?

He may mean interference: if you push someone more than 5 yards away from a loose ball, it's interference, even if it's otherwise legal (within both hands on stick, from front or side, hands together, etc.). But if you couldn't find the right words you might call it an away from the ball push.

You are probably mixed up in the scrum, but refs are watching from a practical distance. They see stuff you don't, unless you're neglecting your objectives. When there are 2 slow teams with suspect ground ball skills, there is a lot of pushing and shoving around the ball and that radius expands as the ground ball remains un-possessed. Refs don't like officiating field hockey any more than you like playing it.
Maybe someone did push. Maybe someone off the ball indeed decided to just lay down a hit with the hope that the ref wouldn't see. Maybe the ref decided that enough was enough with the nonsense and made an executive decision.
What do you care? Play lacrosse! Obsessing about calls is counterproductive. Pick up the ball or back away 5 yards and play defense.
