View Full Version : Can I string a head?

Just bought my 9 year old son an STX head which comes with the dura-mesh pocket.

He would like to dye the head which I think I can handle. My concern is, can I take the mesh off easily and put it back on keeping the pocket in tact?

I have no experience string heads, never played Lax and never even adjusted a head.

Thanks!

It is not that hard. There are many good tutorials stickied in the SDL. If you think it might be a little to much to soon, as around other parents to see if there is a stringer in your area. That being said, there are many people on here who would string it for you cheaper then any store would.

I'm in Louisiana until the end of school then I'm off to Maryland. You can ship it and I can ship it back if you get stuck but I would imagine on Long Island you can find someone to string it.

I probably will bring it to Lax Unlimited. Its just around the block from my office.

Should I stick with the dura-mesh it comes with or have them change it to the hard mesh?

veronalax, that is a pretty difficult tutorial for a first stringing. here watch this video on how to string a good easy pocket, this is how i string when i go quickly, and it works great.

Its picture by picture for an adult (I'm assuming your adult because this is for you kid at least)...I'm pretty sure that the picture by picture could easily be figured out by a grown man. I'm 15 and it made perfect sense to me.

it still takes skill to string and that would be a hard first pocket no matter what. start with the basics

try olympic den. I love how they string there sticks. they have one in suffolk in lake ronkonkoma by me and one in nassau. also one in florida incase anyone else cared. they are also not overpriced. plus they have dying as cheap as $10. compared to Lacrosse unlimiteds what $200+ for a certain dye

my advice is to simply try dying it for yourself(mesh off of course) and then as far as restringing goes, try doing it yourself. it'll save you cash and time in the longrun, plus its a great thing to teach your son when becomes of an age where he can grasp the simple concepts. soon enough he will be the team stick doctor!
there are many great tutorials on here that you can follow if you get stuck too.

but if you feel a smarter choice would be to have it professionally strung, i would still advise against it, but it is your money/head and not mine; do as you please.

Take a digital camera and take several pictures of the top string, sidewalls, etc. Note what holes are being used in the stick and mesh. If you have captured a template via digital picture, you should be able to replicate the job after you've dyed the head.

We are out in Sayville.

Too bad I'm not hearing good things about Lax Unlimited. I have been to the Hauppauge store and it's 2 minutes from my office.

I have not yet been to Olympic Den, maybe but Ill try them.

Appreciate all the offers, not sure if it would be easier to drop off at a store or track down someone here.

Tom, I was thinking about the digital picture route. My concern is, I can probably get the pocket to look the same, but who know if it will work.

Since my son is learning lax, I would hate for him to learn on a bad pocket and need to adjust vs learning the "right" way.

Chances are, you'll be able to get the pocket to throw almost identically to the way that it does now. Whether this is a good thing or not depends on how your son is playing with it. If you are using the same sidewalls and top string that you unstring, the strings will retain their form to some extent, so you'll know where to knot them, etc. when you re-string.

If you take it to a store the first thing they'll do is to throw out the old strings. It is much easier to string with new strings. In this case, the stick will undoubtedly throw different.

Olympic Den and Lax Unlimited need the stick for a few days to string so I gave it a shot. I think it came out ok.

A few comments and questions.

I cut the top string to short but made it work. I'll learn for next time.

I pulled the top strings really tight and now the fold over of the mesh sits in front of the lip, is this OK? Will it effect scooping, should I losen it so the mesh sits under the lip?

I followed a Tut on making a large pocket and doubled up 2 rows diamonds on my first past, it made a great pocket but because the shooter U was already in there it messed it up, I un-did the 2 rows and just did 1 row below the U shooter. I think it will work.

I have the bottom string very lose, I'm not sure if that matters much.

I had to redo the top shooter as it came looped through the stick head. I re-did it. Not sure what the proper way to do it or to keep it flat but I think it is OK. I did not put it back through the head as I dont think in needs to, just through the mesh.

Here are some pictures taken with a phone so not so good. But I think it will work. Thanks for the help!

bright much... and is that rail mesh?
also from what I can make out the top shooter looks loopsided

interj

I guess it's rail mesh, it came with the head.

I don't think the top shooter is off, It's in the same line, the middle on is pulled tight on the left. Thats becuase I had the 2nd line in when I strung the stick and its being pulled up by the side string. I guess I could have noticed that when I was doing the side stings.

make both sides even tension, ohhh ok

Brine, I just made an adjustment based on what you noticed.

The first diamond for the top string was tightend on the left portion of the diamon and the last diamon for the top string was tightend on the top portion. O moved the last to the right side of the diamond. It's more uniformed now.

Thanks for looking.

thats the wrong head to learn to play lax with. its way too pinched.

STX av8 or gait icon, something wide, making learning to catch easier on the boy.
