Hello!

I'm new here and I thought that this would be the best place to ask for advice on lacrosse.

I understand how the game is played so far and where to buy equipment. I have never actually played but I have always wanted to for a long time now. I live in Butts County Ga and right now I am trying to get members to play. I made these flyers and so far there are three of us and I have more members to try to get. I know I need like 14 or 16 players for a team. It'll take some time but I know I can get members.

I do have a few questions though, even though I don't have enough members yet.

1. What is the best way to find people to play?

2. When I do get enough players, how should we train? I did some research and found out that running, cradling the ball and throwing the ball is good, but is there anything else?

3. When I do have our team ready, How can we find other teams to play with us?

4. How can we train if we don't have a team to train with us?

Any advice I can get would help! Thanks!!

~Ann

Here are some answers to your questions.

1. best way to find people to play is to recruit. Post fliers, go to the rec council in Butts county and beyond in GA and say you are trying to field a program and they will be able to assist greatly. Go to middle and high schools and post fliers for a team in need of players. Also word of mouth, get your word out by any means necessary: internet, TV, radio, fliers, that is how you spread the word.
2. You really need to learn more about the game you are trying to coach and teach. Research this site as it is an amazing tool for this and get the old outdated but seriously helps beginners on how to coach women's lacrosse. The head coach of the blue jays also has a book out. I suggest you grab them and learn all you can. In the beginning you need to stress how to catch and throw and learn to cradle and scoop ground balls. The bigger things will come but the fundamentals will stick forever.
3 & 4. If you dont' have a team to play with I suggest you practice on your own even if you dont' have enough players have a little scrimmage each week to keep the small team going. I really suggest using the recreation council in your area or recreation leagues in your area or greater metro area because you can really get a bigger response through them and grow a team and even a host of teams. Go to the YMCA or whatever you have and PLUG PLUG PLUG IT!!

also remember that uslacrosse.org will really help you if you need it. Go to them and ask for assistance if you need more information and to help with the little things like balls and sticks.
