my team has something called the 10-second play. It is when we win the 1st face-off then we pass it 2 the x attackmen who is always open. why is he always open?

Probably because it's off of a fast break from a won face off and the defense has had to slide. They most likely have slid twice at this point and are struggling to keep up with the ball movement and the X-man has crept into the gaps left open by the slides. I'm assuming you mean that he scores and not that he is just open.

This is more of a question for your coach or a teammate though. They actually know the play and can explain it better to you.

it is the same on my team. whenever we get a fast break, me, being the x man, just hang out on the crease being sneaky, and the two other attackmen run laterally down the field, the d slides to them and the fast breaker with the ball, he gets it to me and i quick stick it in unless the goalie clobbers me. the d just forgets about the x man i think.

generally the defense sets up for the fast break in a triangle with the center being somewhere around mid/high crease
if you have a man sliding to hit the ball and two people sliding then theyre worried about the two men in front of the cage rather than the man behind who can seemingly do nothing
im guessing this feeds into whats called a "slow break"

Yeah you are always open because the defense doesnt know what to do. If the guy cuts off your passing lane or slides to you you will not be open.
