Not sure how to phrase this, but I play offense a little bit differently than my teammates in that I'll totally ignore a slide or a big guy gunning for me if I know I can get a running shot off before he hits me. It works 1 or 2 times a game, but I've gotten really close to a concussion and am getting hit so hard I have trouble running off the field to sub off.

What are your guys' thoughts on this? I'm still leaning towards that a goal or two is worth the hurt, but I'm thinking taking big hits over and over again could have implications for me down the road, and am starting to doubt my philosophy.

i think there should be more players like you.

if you are getting that extra goal...the hit should be worth it. if you are worried about getting hurt, i would recommend investing in some seriously protective equipment.

If you want to avoid the big hits then maybe you can try faking and spin around the slide and shoot, know what I mean?

If it is just one guy coming at you and there isn't a second slide just spin off him and then shoot. I hate getting laid out. I just spin then shoot and it works great. Once you get a high enough level that doesn't work any more though. That works when I play JV but when I play Varsity it doesn't work nearly as well.

Well, the thing is is that all the damage is coming from getting laid out. Equipment (besides the mouthgaurd, I'm pretty sure without that I'd be missing some teeth and a bit of my tongue) really doesn't help the kind of 'hurt' I'm getting.

I'm just worried about getting my back and general internal organ area screwed up.

spin off him

Kind of hard to do in my case, I'm only average size and when a 6 foot defender is hitting me at a full sprint... well, you do the math.

You can always throw a bull dodge or face dodge in there.

If someone is sliding to you there should be an open man you should hit for an assist

^^^ya, try to use dodges to draw the slide and open up passes a bit more often.

If you can try to get off the shot earlier, you might be able to draw a call for a late hit. Do one of those early in the game and they won't do it anymore.

If I see a slide coming and don't see a man to pass it off too, I just get the shot off then lower my shoulder into the d man.

I know what you are talking about. Yesterday, there was this guy tking big runs at me the whole game and whenever i drove it did seem that he even cared if i scored as long as he hit me so I took a few late hits (that were not called) and at the end of game he nearly dislocated my shoulder. So right now I am sitting here in a sling typeing with my left hand hoping that i do not have a hairline fracture.

Anyway, pads wont help things like this so either you going to have to take hits or change style. I recommend changeing style before you get hurt

He's right, if he is sliding then you already have one guy behind you and another is leaving his man wide open. Correct me if I'm wrong but it would be less painful and more productive(pending your teamates skill level) to draw and dump in that situation.
