My son plays high school lacrosse. He and a few of his teammates have the opinion that running around with the ball, with one hand on the stick is the proper way to play. Unfortunately, they keep losing the ball. Sometimes on their own and sometimes by getting their stick hit by another player. Either way, they don't look at all in control when running around with one hand on their stick. I know there are times when one handed cradling is appropriate, but shouldn't most of the game be played with two hands on the stick? When is it appropriate to go to a one handed cradle?

Usually you only cradle one-handed either when you are dodging against a defender 1 vs 1 (isolations) or when you need to sprint. One handed cradling while running allows you to pump your arms more than if you were cradling with both hands on the stick

it seems if i understand this right they need to actually cradle.

Okay, this is the problem. He has been telling me that the coach tells them to one hand cradle when running. His problem is that when someone catches up to him, they are whacking him on the stick and he loses it almost every time. He's pretty good with two hands on the stick but seems to want to play one handed a lot of the time. He's also only 5'5"/120 pounds and getting man handled a lot of the time.

Tell them to use their free hand to protect their stick, keeping it in a fixed position a little infront of their body. Alsomake sure they always keep their body in between their stick and their d-man
