This is pretty silly:

During a dead ball, player A1 is off the field in his bench area. Head coach A is tired and taking a nap in the bench area, and--since the bench is full--A1 sits down on top of the coach. As the official prepares to start play, A1 realizes they don't have the proper personnel on the field and calls a timeout, and the trail official hears the request.

According to the rules, should he grant the timeout request? :nut:

Try looking at the exact wording of the NFHS rule and try to be "flexible" in your interpretation. :naughty:

I've got illegal procedure, I believe sleeping during a lacrosse game is a technical foul. Without looking, I imagine a player is defined as one of the players not on the bench? That's just a guess without looking.

NFHS 4-28.1: When the ball is dead, only a member of either team who is ON THE FIELD or a team's head coach may request an official time out.

I don't know what you mean by flexible, but A1 was not on the field, he is not the coach, and since the ball is dead, he is not eligible to call a time out. So no, I do not grant a T.O. Is there any OTHER way to read this rule?

Yes:

NFHS 4-28.1: When the ball is dead, only a member of either team who is ON (the field) OR (a team's head coach) may request an official time out.

Player A1 is NOT "on the field," but he is "on his team's head coach," so he can call a timeout. :chuckle:

Alright, I said I was being pretty silly, but there had been so few posts here lately that I didn't feel bad about posting it. And, heck, I might even feel sorry for team and and grant the timeout because their coach is so pathetic he's sleeping on the sideline. :chuckle:
