The way that I now read the NFHS conduct rule is that there is no coverage in it for actions between opponents/opposing teams. (After the rule change for the 2005 season) Does anyone disagree with this?

My understanding is that they wanted to crack down on poor sportsmanship and get more consistency by punishing all baiting and taunting with USC. This is now in line with NCAA rules.

It was somewhat surprising to me to realize that, under the letter of the law, you can't really call a conduct foul as sort of a "minor USC" unless you're calling it for objecting to an official's call in some way. If two guys from opposing teams go chest-to-chest and start jawing at each other but don't fight or take a swing or curse, you can't call it a conduct foul: it's either nothing or USC.

On the one hand, I'd like to have a lessor foul to call in some situations, but on the other hand I think it's not bad to take a hard line on poor sportsmanship. The big issue is that two USC fouls = ejection under NFHS rules, so it may actually lead to *fewer* fouls being called.

If two player go chest to chest then I've got USC. They can both sit in the box and it will be still be even. 9v9.

Yeah, okay, maybe that was a bad example. What if a player called a player on the other team a baby? Maybe that's something that you might have given a conduct foul in the past but now you're forced to give a USC.

I don't know, it just seems like there should be a way to give this a CF instead of a USC, expecially if this is the difference between an ejection and not.

lol, I don't think that was a good example either. Clearly taunting, I approve of NFHS move to stop taunting/baiting on the lacrosse field. Like I said in another thread, bad sportsmanship is on the rise and will continue to get worse if it is not taken care of.
