A couple of questions for the more experienced:
1) What exactly is "topside"?
2) In a practice scrimmage, a fellow defender received the ball on a clear from the goalie, took it all the way to the other cage, and scored. Under what circumstances is that legal and/or illegal?
Any help is appreciated!

im having a brain fart and forget what topside is. not to confuse you but a long stick middie can do this legally bring th ball down and score without any real complication, but a close defender must be sure that one of his midfielders stays back on defense because you can only have 6 people on offense

topside is when your attackman or middie beats you so that he is directly in front of the goal, you always want to push your man to the outside and don't want to let him in front of the goal so that he doesnt have an uncontested shot

any defender (or goalie) is allowed to run the ball down the field if and ONLY IF one of the three midfielders on his team stays behind the midfield line to act as a defender

staying topside is staying higher than the attackman in relationship to the goal. This way you can turn him away and below the goal, meaning he is no longer a threat to score.

as long as their are 4 people on the side of the field where the defenders are (including goalie), its ok. and no more than 4 long poles allowed.

This is the best answer you will get for "what is top side". As for "how can a defender score", it seems that everybody has answered it correctly.

what youve probably heard his to not let your man get topside. an example of this would be if youre a few yards above goal line extended, you want to be positioned so that your body is angled more towards the endline. this way you arent allowing him to get above you, where his shot will have a better angle and it will be easier to get into the middle of the field. youre forcing him back towards GLE where his angle gets worse, and he becomes a non-threat.
