so im a very small guy, but i was the only sophmore to make varsity this year. Im about 5'7 and weight only around 125. ( Im a stick i know) im just wondering for lifting, do i want to lift more weight with less reps or more reps with less weight to gain muscle mass. I feel like i need to bulk up if want to be truly successfull at the varsity level. You guys can throw anything else out there that you feel i should work on to become better... the more tips/help the better... Thanks

My coach is the littlest mouse out there and he played for Towson, and then look at MP, hes 5 nothing 100 and a few lbs. If your skinnier and faster work on agility and yes lift weights and put on muscle mass but make sure you are not losing speed. Im a larger middie for a, well was a freshman at 510 180, but I was slower than some of out other middies. Their are advantages to either size or speed, whichever works best for you

well i havent lifted since winter training, and then we lifted every other day for like 3 months or so. So at the time my maxes were alot higher, currently i dont know where they stand, and im guessing they are decently lower now... When i find out what they are... ill tell you haha

Bruno
thats always encourageing to know there are other small guys out there, but thanks for the advice, alot of the other guys were always saying in needed to bulk up, but i was probably in the top 5 fastest guys on the team... what would you say i should do to work on my agility?

That is nothing, I am going into my senior year, and I'm 5 ft. 5 1/2 in. But then again, I am the leader in points in my conference, so size does not matter as much as some think it does, as long as you have athletic ability, and determination, and I can't fail to mention exceptionally good stick skills.
So yes, condition, do some weight lifting, but focus more on stick skills.

I say work with what you got, If you have great agility, work on making it better so you can burn unathletic poles. Run daily, go to a local track and do 50m starts, jump a hellava lotta rope, jump onto and off of your local curb 100 times daily and make sure your on the balls of your feet, get a speed ladder, the thing football players use, and what my dad used to do for agility in football, the good old fashion tire and rope on the back

it all starts in the kitchen, theres no point lifting if you diet isnt right, so find a good bulking diet (theres a sticky above) and then begin lifting,

check out the sticky post title Nutrition Program at the top of the page. write down the foods there that you do not have in your kitchen so you can buy them. you dont have to go into the whole diet extremely fast, be conservative going into it so its easier to get into. mainly, start by following the instructions for breakfast, post-workout meal, and supplements (whey, casein, multivitamin). also switch the majority of the fluids you drink to water. then get into the rest of the diet. but get into what i said first as soon as possible.

there is a difference between just eating a ton of calories and eating good calories right?

lacrosseking2

yes there is a HUGE difference
if you eat a ton of calories in the form of junk food like candy, pop tarts, ice cream, etc, you will gain fat.
if you eat a ton of calories while staying on a balanced diet, eating vegetables, meat, breads, etc etc your going to gain muscle.

(I'd recommend just using 100% whey protein, its NCAA legal and good for you)

oo questions about whey protein... do you have to be lifting for it to do you any good? or does it just build muscle because?

You have to lift before using it, but that also doesn't mean you have to live in the gym to see results, even if you just do push ups, sit ups, and pull ups, and then use the protein it will still help.

If your just starting out lifting, I suggest you learn the proper way to do the work outs that you want to do. (this doesnt require getting a personal trainer because honestly ANYONE can be a personal trainer) Also, if you want to see results your going to have to be dedicated, with eating right and lifting. I tore my ACL in April and have been lifting and started lifting right after that. I went from benching around 95lbs to 140lbs. If your willing to put time and effort into your training you will be very happy with the end results

Yeah Mikey Powell is not 5'10" but that didn't stop him from becoming a four time 1st Team All-American. You can count on one hand how many people have been a 1st teamer all four years. Jason Coffman from Carthage is the NCAA all-time leader in points for all three divisions and he wasn't tall at all. That guy went on to score 451 points in only 62 games (7.27 ppg!!!). That's just further proof that there's a place for everyone on the lacrosse field. As long as you're getting it done and producing for your team at a greater rate then you're making mistakes then you'll be alright.
