So saturday at my game, a guy was running up the field with the ball and was right behind him. I was too far to try and stick check him with two hands so i used my right hand only and swung it around, without making contact with his body, hit the bottom of his stick and the ball flew out of his poclet and i scooped it up. The ref blew his whistle and called a slash penalty on me so i had to sit in the box for 1 min. Was this really a slash becasue I had control of my stick even though it was with only 1 hand. :banghead:

Yes, it was a slash, because the official said so.
FWIW, you can be called for a slash on a wild swing even if NO contact is made. Control your stick and you can avoid these calls.

Wrap checks from behind are dangerous, and many refs take a very dim view of a stick, no matter how skilled the operator, coming from BEHIND another player and knocking his stick. Too much potential for error and injury. I saw two broken wrists last season as a result of this questionable maneuver. And they were very nasty breaks. A stick, especially a long stick, generates tremendous velocities when held at the end and swung about an axis point. It can easily reach 40 mph and up.
This danger is especially true at the middle- and even high-school levels. I would (as usual) agree with LaxRef: It's a penalty because the ref said it was. End of story. Better to catch the attacker and get a clean shot at his stick from the side rather than from behind.
And to second what LaxRef said. You do NOT need to make contact to get a slash. That is an issue we revisit from time to time to remind players of this: A wild swing, even if it entirely misses the opponent, is a punishable offense under the slashing rule. I suggest you read it in its entirety, as well as the whole of section 5: Personal Fouls.

i am assuming it was a saturday morning thing for lacrosse america. the big reason the caled it is because there are a lot of new players there picking up sticks for the first time, and if they see an experianced player do it they will all start throwing the crazy checks. If it was during the spring season and you landed it like that they probably would not have called it, but if it was a wild swing it should have been called
