I've always heard that you should wear your gloves whenever hitting the wall / shooting, but now I'm starting to hear that I should also wear my helmet.

Wearing a helmet (especially now that it's summer) seems like it would be super inconvenient, and wouldn't really impact throwing / shooting form.

Does it really matter that much?

The guys at Tufts do, as you can see in this movie.

I dunno i think in order to practice shooting you should wear gloves

But if you really want to simulate in game shooting wearing everything would be required because elbow pads restircted movement. Helmet might affect vision and adds weight to your head

The helmet thing is probably so you don't have a shot come back and hit you in the face, my coach makes us practice with helmets and gloves if we aren't going full contact for that reason

It will help your vision a tad but that might be it. If you have a newer helmet thought it won't make that much of a difference. You won't get hit in the face off a pipe shot at least.

Shoulder pads and arms. Those restrict the most movement and that really what people should be practicing with to get a better shot and better moves come gameday.

Kyle Harrison says you should. That's why.

helmet has saved me a few times from what would have probably knocked me out a few times. Ripping shots that hit the crossbar just right come back really fast.

It is for vision purposes. I do, my team does, my coach does. Shoulder pads and elbow pads do not restrict movement that much if they are fitted the right size and not too tight.

I would. Just one more thing to get used to.

this is kind of off topic... but if you look at 6:05 at that Tufts video.. they have two poles on the faceoff... whats with that?

Always practice the way you want to play. To get used to shooting, whether time and room or on the run, you can go without whatever you want, but to refine your skills wear your gear because the way you do it on the wall is how you will do it in the game.

I think that's the point, and rebound from the pipes can dislocate your jaw or something bad like that.

shoes is correct. the world looks substantially different from within a helmet

I never wear my helmet while practicing at home, for one reason and one reason only...here in sunny florida it is always way too hot and there is no reason for me to stink up my helmet if I dont need to. Plus for the sake of protection, a backyard goal doesn't send a pipe shot back at you like a game goal so you don't have to worry about that much.

wearing the helmet/gloves looks cool. That is as good of a reason as any.

I'm for gloves and helmet, as they have a big impact on your shot through feel and perception, but pads only influence you by being a minor inconvenience. In a game, you will notice the bars of your helmet when sighting up a shot, but you never notice the fit of your pads, so I think gloves and head are all you need.

As for protection from stray shots, I'd recommend a cup over a lid any day.
