seriously, im tired of people walking around saying, "oh, that band, game, or movie sucks because its 'mainstream.'" people think that just because they watch or listen to stuff that no one else knows about makes them superior and better than everyone else. i listen to a lot of music and a lot of types of music that are no where near mainstream. do you know why? BECAUSE I ENJOY IT. not because i am insecure about myself and need to feel cool by naming a thousand unknown bands. yea, it is true that some bands completely sell out, or the music industry completely changes a good bands style, and the 'mainstream' is to blame for this, but people need to chill out. ive talked to some kids about music, and literally have been laughed at because i like DMB. Apparently all their music is horrible because other people like it. i'm seeing it happen with napoleon dynamite, too. people are like "that was my favorite movie until everyone saw it." GET A LIFE. Base what you like and dislike on YOUR OWN OPINIONS or logic. don't just hate something because its mainstream or close to it.
that's my rant for the day. wow i feel better now.
but seriously, anyone else agree?

I can and cannot agree.
First off, I listen and watch whatever the hell I want. I listen to anyone and I don't feel special by naming a million bands that no one has heard about. Some people feel special when they pet a turtle. We are all different and do what we want. If they like that, fine, let them because I don't care.
The people that do feel special by naming bands that no one knows enjoy the idea of being in a secret society of "goodness" (for the lack of a better word at this moment in time). I don't care so why should you?
Secondly, the concept of Napoleon Dynamite is the worst. I have never seen it nor do I plan to. The person, Napoleon Dynamite is a pitiful *******. Everything he says is asinine. What's worse is when people reiterate what he said! I can't stand being around people that say the same crap repeatedly because that pisses me off.
As I was saying to a very close friend today in a vehicle, "Go back to a time when you were happy, analyze why you were happy, and become happy once more. If you do not care for your own wellness, no one else will. Do what makes you feel happy and don't succumb to others."

i can see what your saying. i can even see it in lacrosse. I have a friend who would absolutely not buy a head soley because "everyone has it." same kid complained (and was actually very close to going out and buying a new head) when a couple other people on the team showed up with the same head. in this case if everyone has it could it possibly be because *gasp* its a good head? music and such wise, i can see your point. and it can get annoying, but if they want to do it, let em. its not as though it causes you physical pain.
Hmmm. I can appreciate the non-mainstream as well as the mainstream. I love Radiohead, and they are mainstream, as well as other uber-mainstream things in the media. But I love Napoleon because I think it's hilarious, and instead of quoting him after watching the movie, I end up talking like him, but I'm more cool (is that even possible?!?!?!?) than he is. My boots just don't have quite as much steez. I just think it's cool when people adhere to their own style instead of copying somebody else's because it will make them cooler. I mean, come on, be original! Ooh... Adult ADD commercial. Focus lost. Post over.
EDIT: Regained my focus. Umm, I have a lot of respect for people that do what they do, instead of doing something for other people. I don't dress like my friends. I buy most of my stuff from the Gap because I want to feel and look good. I try to dress well. I snowboard, not because my friends wanted me to, or made fun of me skiing, but because I saw Afterlame, I saw something in snowboarding that I didn't see that skiing and so I switched. Great fun! I have respect for those kids playing Magic out somewhere, because that is what they do. So what if it's not cool to do? What I dislike are the kids that are just flipping around not for the fun of it, but int he quest to become more popular. Popularity is such a wasteful thing. I mean, I don't see the point in having it. You're not you. The coolest kids stick to their style, and they don't conform because it's what they think will get them the most material things. This doesn't just go for the kids that are playing lacrosse because it's the new punk rock, it's the kids that also are hanging out at Hot Topic and love Good Charlotte because they want to believe that it will make them better than other people. Pride can get in the way of so many things, and it is so useless. I want to lose my pride and become more humble, but it's hard, because I see what I have become and how much of a jerk I can be. I want to get an awesome book from my friend that he said is absolutely amazing to read, and has really helped his relationships with other people. I am rambling beyond belief.

Not everyone is like that, though. It's not that I didn't like Napoleon Dynamite after everyone saw it, but it's actually more like I didn't like it much to begin with. Same with music. I still like The Shins, even after everyone has heard of them (thanks to Garden State). Any other band I currently hate, that is now mainstream, I probably would've still hated before they were big.

I listen to a lot of bands that aren't mainstream and such. I mean there still popular bands and people that listen 2 the same music as I do will know who they are probably whether they like them or not. Bands like Underoath, Funeral For A Friend, Boys Night Out, Hawthonre Heights, etc...there not mainstream but there not no-name bands. The only things I don't like about a band becoming main stream is usually they play shows with under 800 people there and tickets are about $10 so its cheap, fun, and a pretty cool thing when the band can walk around in the crowd after they play. Also, I hate it when a band becomes main stream and starts selling out and worrying more about what people like rather then what they are about and then they lose their sense of meaning. Also, the worst is the fans who are "diehard" fans who saw them on MTV and ordered their t-shirt off line.
It's not that I won't like a band once they become mainstream or even pop because a lot of bands I like such as TBS, Fall Out Boy, Brand New, etc have been becoming popular and everything but I don't want things to change.
When you think about it it's jsut like lacrosse. The lacrosse community is a close, pretty friendly, relaxed group of people who enjoy playing the same sport. By lacrosse not being as popular as basketball, baseball, or football, we gain something special by playing. If lacrosse was to become a huge sport, we would lose the closeness that we share as lacrosse players, sure more people would know about the sport which would be nice, but then you'd have more jerks playing and people who don't care about the game. This may be just my oppinion and it may sound selfish but I'd prefer lacrosse to stay as not such a popular sport because I like having my "lacrosse" friends and it seems whereever I go I have a bond with other lacrosse players and I would miss that feeling if lacrosse would become a mianstream sport. So I am in favor of things that aren't mainstream but I won't stop playing lax if it becomes a mainstream sport.

i feel the EXACT same way about lacrosse. i like playing a sport that the rest of my school doesn't play. i love how whenever i talk to anyone that plays lax i have that "bond" and i can just talk to them forever. i don't think as many other sports have so many people that are so passionate about it, and i don't want lacrosse to turn into another soccer.
I don't want lacrosse to be infused with these ****y jerks who think they are better for no reason whatsoever. I have no problem with people playing it, but when the jerks come in, it just ruins whatever sport. Like in gym, we were playing a fun game of flag football, and then all of the jocks came in and took over our enjoyable game. People become too intense, and they need to chill out.

(Example:"lets go to homecoming and light stuff on fire in the bathrooms the whole time") kids like that annoy me terribly.

you must all hate me then because i am incredibly pretentious when it comes to music and to a lesser extent movies.
i wont see naploleon dynamite now because too many idiots have seen it, it keeps me from having to discuss anything with them. donne darko seems to be the 'in' movie, the movie everyone has to have on their list and love even though they never actually took time to understand the movie. which is unfortunate because it is a really good flick.
but whatever, everyone does what they want, its just that some are swayed more easily by the media conglomerates of the world.
Man... un-mainstream is becoming so mainstream, I think i might go back to mainstream. Its the next un-mainstream! I like Good Charolette because everyone hates them. Woo hoo!

Well, I just plain hate kids that think they are uber-super-to-be-exalted-indie/underground because they saw napoleon dynamite. It was in nationwide theatres forEVER. That movie has its points, but I think it got pretty old. I like movies with substance, ND was lacking this in the worst kinda way.
Back to the music, I agree with the others. I couldn't care less if you like what I listen to or not. I let kids scroll through my ipod and they are like "the red chord...right on, the blood brothers...thats straight man,...jay-z??"
Thats right suckaz. Everyone knows me for being strictly about hardcore/metal/whatnot. I listen to Jay-z. I listen to Nas. I listen to Fall Out Boy. I listen to Dr. Dre. I listen to pop rock and all that. Not always am I in the frame of mind for Glass Casket, Lamb of God or Converge. My moods change along with my music. I'm also a big eminem fan. He can just rhyme words that shouldn't rhyme. But i DO hate the "bling" rap. Lil' Jon, Fat Joe, Chingy, Nelly - all terrible.
The moment you adapt your musical choices for your lame friends or MTV is the moment you have lost your fertility.
I'll admit, there is some music in the mainstream that i would rather bend my knee-cap backwards with a cro-bar than listen to, but its not all bad. Listen to what you want. Stop worrying about your image. No one cares.

About the music, I dont care what people say about my taste since its me listening to it, not them. I dont really mind if people know what I listen to, I am proud of it. I dont have a problem playing my "out of the nor" music around others[im in a dorm]. Or letting my itunes play list be seen.
I will admit, this was a long time ago but I did get into a few bands that have been played on MTV, (Third Eye Blind) After I thought about this for a while, I cant really hate MTV, its a business and its doing amazing marketing music that people will eat right up. Now this isnt to say all bands shown on MTV are talentless hacks, just good a good marketing job. I dont care if the music is mainstream or listened to by everyone or by no one, to me if it sounds good, then it is good. (ok, weak argument but its how i sort of see it)
I can sort of relate to the whole not wanting a band going huge, however that isnt to say I dont want them getting new fans. My faviorte band is not from the US and Ive been into them for a couple years. I have their T-shirts and cds, only because I like their music and I respect them musically. Ive seen them twice live, however, to me they have the potential to be plastered on MTV. I dont think it will happen since its a bit harder than what they usually play but the band still has songs that would appeal to many and some other things.
my comment has to do with napoleon dynamite... i stopped watching it as much because im sick of it. im sick of hearing people butcher the quotes and mimic napoleon and kip. 2 seconds ago no one knew about it and now theyre napoleon. it really turns me off to the movie, kinda like hearing a song a thousand times on the radio and not being able to listen to it anymore.

Man... un-mainstream is becoming so mainstream, I think i might go back to mainstream. Its the next un-mainstream! I like Good Charolette because everyone hates them. Woo hoo!
Ugh....pick a better example than good charlotte. They really do suck. Except for like 2 of their songs.
No, all of them suck. They all got unanimous votes.
Um, I admit, I'm a bit of a stuck-up indie kid, but when I talk about music, people give me weird looks of disbelief, so I just say I like Led Zeppelin when people ask. "Who are The Shins? What are ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead? THIS SUCKS!" So I keep some Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Dave Matthews, Death Cab for Cutie and stuff like that on my iPod so everybody can be somewhat happy, and older Snow Patrol is rumored to be awesome.
SUPER-POP: Franz Ferdinand. Awesome? YES! That's one of about very few examples of pop that I listen to. But whatever. I'm fine with my lists.
I love Napoleon. But I love Memento (edited, of course) even more. It is one of the most amazing movies ever, and my favorite I've seen because of its intelligence. SE7EN is a movie I'd like to see, but it seems so violent and stuff, and I can't really stand excessive gore. I recommend Memento, because it's just brilliant. I also enjoyed Spy Game. Killer movie. Also edited.
I don't hate mainstream, but I hate the need to conform in middle/high school because nobody really acts how they are inside, except for a few kids who don't care. I mean, it's just frusturating.

Just curious, no offence intended, but where do you get the edited versions? Is there some company that produces edited tapes of movies?
Yep, over here in Utah, they are all over. But you can download Cleanflicks online, I think, which is what we did back when we lived back East. But it wasn't as good.
Again, not to offend, but i cant stand edited films. I can understand bleeping on the radio. But you said it yourself, Memento is a work of art, and it deserves to be viewed in its whole.
These questions don't really offend me, or even come relatively close whatsoever. Um, I like what I like, you like what you like. But yes, Memento is awesome. My only problem is X-Men and X2, because Wolverine has some great lines that get deleted. Ugh.

so this thread is about how people try to be unique and non-mainstream right? well has anyone noticed how EVERYONE is trying to be different and cool and unliked everyone else. but while they are doing this so is everyone else. so basically they are all trying to be different in the same way...if any of that makes sense. so my point is that there is no point (wow this post keeps getting better...) anyway if u want to be different then just be urself because obviously no one is like u.
as for the napoleon thing. all of u who are rebelling and not seeing it just because everyone else has and are super obnoxious about repeating lines. ur lame. because its funny. and its true that there are people that saw in wayy before other people because tehre like werent commercials for it until after it was in theaters and think theyre cool. but ur just trying to be cool by saying u think it will suck and its not worth ur time to watch. anyway people should just stop trying to be cool BECAUSE UR NOT.

I don't hate mainstream because it's popular. I hate it because it takes away from the personalities of the people within. Most people are pretty cool when you talk to them one-on-one. And a lot of people don't realize that.

I didn't really like Napolean either. I thought it had some funny parts but in general I just thought it was bad. The whole idea of a movie with no plot can be somewhat amusing but this movie like tried to hard to have no point. I found Napolean (the character) to be more annoying than funny and the only reason I found the movie to be alright was because I thought Pedro was funny.
