whats the next best thing to build endurance besides running and swimming alot?

Erging/Rowing. An Erg is a rowing machine, the ones with the handle and the wheel that spins. Make sure you ask someone who actually does crew to show you how to do it, otherwise you will look foolish and strain your back. Swimming is the best, endurance wise, but erging rates right behind it. Plus, erging builds your forearms.

(i'm assuming by endurance you mean cardio endurance)
For most people running outside in winter is a real pain in the ***( temperature, snow, etc.) A great alternative is cross-country skiing. That is great for staying in shape. If you're not a snow kinda of person then the eliptical machine, stationary bike( along with road bike), stair machine( if you live in an apartment climbing stairs is an excellent substitution to running and doesn't cost anything.
