Given the new NCAA rule 4-5-g whereby a ball in flight as the period ends is now considered a loose ball...

Is rule 4-6 ar 30 one that should have been deleted or is it correct as it stands? If it stands..it resurrects my old thread about having a technical violation after the period ends...hmmm...

I've got that one marked off in my copy already, as well as A.R. 31. There's no way they should be in there! It certainly doesn't fit with TPOAD. For those of you who haven't downloaded the new rules yet:

A.R. 30. Team B is man-down as the period ends. A1 passes to A2. While the ball is in flight, the horn sounds, ending the period. B1 then holds A2 to keep him from catching the ball. RULING: Official blows whistle as the horn sounds to end the period. Loose-ball hold. Ball awarded to Team A to start the next period.

This would have us calling a dead-ball hold in a situation where no advantage is gained. It makes no sense.

Fellows good points both, it is clear this is one more place where the change wasn't propagated all the way through the book, as it leaves us with a confusing message.

The High School rule (NFHS) is completely different page 25, Rule 4-5 Article 7.
