I'm taking health and in the book it says most americans get enough protein by eating regular food. The extra protein is then turned into fat. So whats the point of the protein shakes?

extra protien doesnt turn into fat. i dont think so at least, i thiunk you just crap it out. or fart it out. the point of protien shakes is because weightlifters and high endurance activity cardio workers need more protien then the average fat american

What studies does it cite that claim that? How much protein per day does the book claim is needed? How much is the average American taking in now? What about dieting or special health considerations?

Due to what protein does, repair muscle and help build new muscle, most of it is excreted if not used. You would have to take quite a bit a day to approach a level where it would make you fat, I think. Fats and carbohydrates are the problem calories in terms of building fat.

Yea americans get enough protein. Not every american is an athlete who is constantly building, damaging, and healing muscles, which is where protein is needed. Excess protein becomes an energy source.

Protein is NOT an energy source. And everyone, all the time, needs amino acids (protein) for daily upkeep of biological systems.

Well all the excess protein is pissed out... and yes the average meat eating American gets more then enough protein, but the average American sits on there but all day. Athletes need more protein to rebuild muscles... etc. Athletes should be consuming about .5-3 grams of protein per pound depending on how hard your working

Yeah, Protein isn't really essential to the average American. But then again, the average American live a sedentary lifestyle. Protein shakes help supplement an athletes need for protein, as said above.

I mean, the average American isn't peeing in a wheat field and farming their own rice, so they get enough protein from meats and dairy products that they buy at the grocery store. But IF you are an athlete, and IF you want to build muscle you absolutely havew to consume a larger amount of protein. Teh standard adage is 1g of protein for every pound of body weight. I consume about 80% of that and I've gained a lot more muscle since I started supplementing my workout with protein just over a year ago. Try it, if it doesn't work, you're not working out hard enough.

If you have no carbs....Protein is where you get your energy from, which is wht low carb diets are unhealthy. Look it up.

Protein can be used for energy, but it rarely is. There are three main sources of energy: Carbohydrates, Fat, and Protein, and they are always used in that order, which explains why the Atkins diet works. The calorie(energy) to gram ratio for each substance is something like (6)c per gram of carbs, 9c/g for fat, and 4c/g for protein. Fat is the most efficient when it comes to energy versus weight, but carbs are used first. Protein is only used as an energy source after all your body fat is used up, and if you have enough money to play lacrosse, then you have enough to buy food. The only people who really use protein as an energy source are those who are actually starving.
