LaxAttack2

um i dont really have a scale with me that i cud measure it and i dont know how accurate i am just by holding them but this thing is light, not like any titaniums or anything, but it's light, lighter than an 803 i cudnt say
so let's say that we did set up some way of selling these, would all of you buy them or most of you?

Psh cold in denver, I'll test here in chicago where it gets cooooolllddddd. And I'm a d player. And I rock. So I should get to test the pole for cold climes =D. Thats stick though. Pure sickness. If its got a reasonable price I would definitly be interested in a D length... Would this guy offer replacements however? I mean Unless I protyped one in the cold I'd be sketchy about taking a new item out into the 20 degree weather and hitting stuff with it.

wow thats nuts what material is it supposed to be?
That is wicked cool.
It's carbon fiber twill (silver texalium?), and the inside looks like a carbon fiber
and aramid (aka kevlar) twill weave. You can see examples of the material at
www.sollercomposites.com. It's cool stuff. I made a couple of shafts
for fun using a combination of CF and CF/Kevlar. They guys at Soller suggested
that the inner layers be CF for strength and an outer layer of kevlar because
is tougher and more impact/abrasion resistant than CF.
One shaft turned out ok, but not quite the right shape, the first one was all
misaligned. Both are wicked light and look to be pretty tough, virtually no flex
at all. I can post pictures and describe the process if anyone wants.

Carbon fiber it self is not expensive, its the process in forming it and makeing it that take a ton of time and tim is money.
BuckWyld
02-03-2005, 10:09 AM
am I right that carbon fiber is soft and comes in rolls, then you put on some sort of firming agent on it and mold it and then it drys hard? do you end up with an edge on the outside of the shaft?

am I right that carbon fiber is soft and comes in rolls, then you put on some sort of firming agent on it and mold it and then it drys hard? do you end up with an edge on the outside of the shaft?
A little CF 101 :chuckle:
I'm no expert, but this is what I've learned.
It's the basically the same idea as reinforced concrete. The bulk of
the strength come from an epoxy glue (the concrete), strong but very brittle.
The CF is strong in tensile (pulling) strength but weak in torsion (twist or bend).
The CF is impregnated with the epoxy to combine the strength features of both
materials. The CF prevents the epoxy from pulling apart under load and helps
distribute the force, and the epoxy adds the rigidity to the CF.
CF can be laid out by hand and shaped around pretty much any kind of form like
a plaster cast or paper mache. Somewhere along the line they figured out in
order to get the maximum strength, you need to get rid of any tiny air bubbles
(voids) and that there is an optimum ratio of epoxy to fiber. You get both by
squeezing out the excess epoxy by vacuum bagging the piece. You suck the
air out of the vacuum bag and it compacts the epoxy/CF around the form,
and squeezes out the excess epoxy.
I am guessing that this is also how you the sharp corners. You put the layers
of material around a form in the shape of the shaft, like a piece of solid aluminum
and when the piece is compacted, the layers confrom to the shape of the form
pretty closely. You couldn't get this by hand. It's like putting layer after
layer of tape on. Each layer rounds off the corner a bit and after several layers
the corners would be completely rounded off.
Making a shaft if not that difficult, nor particularly expensive once you get set
up. It's about $50 in materials at retail prices. The work and expense is getting
set up. A small vacuum bagging system is $2-300, you have to make a suitable
core (called a mandrel), and you have to play around with CF types (there are
many types), number of layers etc. You probably have to make a bunch of
duds that are throwaways until you get the right combination. So that's why
a Harrow costs $100. Materials + operation costs + recovery of research + profit.
I doubt you could get the Black Dragon for much less than $100 unless the
guy is willing to eat a bunch of the up front costs, or take a smaller profit on
each one.
gawd that was long.

sorry, I was not clear in my question. the cf starts as sheets right? therefore you must either wrap it and have the two edges meet or wrap one over the other, so when you are finished the outside of the shaft will have the edge of one of the sheets of cf on it, this seems like it would be a weak point in the shaft, not nessesarily like it would break but what stops it from starting to lift up, catch on things and basically tear its self apart? or does the cf start out in more of a ribbon that is wound down like you would tape a shaft.

I get it. Sorry for the long winded response.
You can get it as a "sleeve" or a continuous woven tube, like a tube sock.
That way there is no seam to overlap. I got some from Soller Composites.
There's a picture of one about half way down this page:
http://www.cstsales.com/HTBuildCarbonSpar.htm
Its neat because the way it is woven, it can expand/shrink in diameter, the
same as the trick finger cuffs. If you pull on it, the weave tightens up and
gets narrower in diameter, the opposite if you push on it. Once you slip it over
a core you pull on it to tighten it up to conform to the core's shape.
It also shows how you would make a shaft, including the vacuum bagging. To
make a hollow shaft, you remove the center core material. It's used a lot to
make model rockets, masts and spars for sailboats, I I have even seen CF
tubes for homemade telescopes.
KnightsLAXDad
02-03-2005, 02:49 PM
or does the cf start out in more of a ribbon that is wound down like you would tape a shaft.
This is also a way of doing it called filament wound, which is as you said, a single
thread wound like tape, or two or three threads wound at an angle to each other. A lot of graphite golf shafts are made this way. It's not particularly strong
since the filaments are not interwoven.

Ay mang, on looks alone I'd purchase one for D. Um, if you want REAL cold weather testing, hand it off to the Vermonter. Rebellax10, he lives in a place where it gets ridiculously cold in the winter. I would know, I used to live there. Now, Utah, not quite so cold, but if I could get a hook-up, that'd be beyond sweet. And for shortie testing, I'm betting Paulgaitrulz is getting the most abuse in his box games, so I'd send a prototype up to him. This looks fantastic. I remember when I bought an STX R-force for $10. Offset. Hot stuff man, I loves dem carbon fiber shafts. Can't wait to hear more about them.

Maine try Western New York, with all that lake effect snow, its COLD!
Whenever the snow falls, it's always warmer. In Vermont, it gets too cold to snow for about half of the winter. Try a consistent -20 degree windchill for two weeks in a row. Hard. I mean, when the sun shines, it's absolutely awful, because all of that sun reflects right off of the snow and makes it so much colder. It's way better when the clouds are out and it's snowing, trust me on this one.

ok you guys, it's the much anticipated update on the black dragon:
right now the creator of the shafts is making more prototypes and passing them around some more and yes dpoles, there is a black dragon prototype going around and it is a beast, and as far as durability goes wtih these things, i havent seen a dent yet, theres a little scuff on the finish or coating bc my friend wanted to try to break it so he took a baseball swing at my blackdragon...nothign happend, ok so this is where i don't know how indepth i can get with details, as far as mass production goes, i don't think that mass production will be possible, mass production as in the way that the big brands do it, these will be almost special order shafts, and so the estimated total of the black dragon as of today is somewhere under $200 think around high grade titanium price range, it's really a you get what you pay for kind of thing as far as i can tell its a beast, not a single scratch and wow it is light, i'l try to update more on the shaft and its specifics as i find out more, but just wanted to keep you guys updated

did you get urs for free laxattack?

$200 and $250 is not even close to reasonable for an untested, non-titanium shaft.

04-10-2005, 02:40 PM
I would pay 250 for the pole, if it had like a two year warranty. I say two year jsut caus it hasnt been extensivly tested yet.

sup ben and eric its ryan h. dang so many people want these things. by the way bens dad makes them. i play on their team and these shafts are so cool. ben has a swerve on his black dragon. if he puts the ball in the pocket the whole stick can balance on his fingertip. the shafts are so light. hough they are 2oo and 250 bucks still get one
laxplaya123

ben told me they were making a black dragon goalie shaft. he said that the whole thing would be made out of carbon fiber, even the head!

yea i would buy one if it had like a 1-2 year warrenty on it it looks sweet and as a pole i think it would kick ***
dlaxer
05-11-2005, 06:18 PM
um i dont really have a scale with me that i cud measure it and i dont know how accurate i am just by holding them but this thing is light, not like any titaniums or anything, but it's light, lighter than an 803 i cudnt say
so let's say that we did set up some way of selling these, would all of you buy them or most of you?
:wow: GIMME ONE OF THOSE!! dude, i want one in d length ohhhh, man, that would be so damn sweet :guns: :yumyum:
zackass5
05-11-2005, 07:47 PM
looks nice. should be around 30 bucks as a start up company though. i mean nothing is proven yet...
i would buy one in d length 4 like 60$ or mabye more that kicks ballsak hard but i agree it should be cheap to start couse it's not proven. they should pay us. :agree:
PuLsE_SpEeD
05-11-2005, 07:53 PM
I'll test the goalie shaft for free. :agree:
I'm not so sure I'd buy one only because if you break any part of it you have you buy a whole new stick. If it's proven then I'd think about getting one.

05-14-2005, 10:44 AM
it looks nice but i still enjoy getting kryptolytes for 80 bucks and having them hold out for more than a season. 250 just sounds way to expensive for a prototype shaft (which it kind of is since its newly designed and not fully battle tested yet).

05-14-2005, 11:07 AM
I think i need to change my pants.
I want one of those hot thangs in D pole but for 250? dang. That's quite a lot.
Another thing to think of is the fact that you need to get it approved by the NCAA and NFHS.
If Ben's dad is making D poles, let us all know. I would go around my neighboorhood collecting pop (soda) cans to get up to that 250 price.

Seriously i doubt any of you guys will get to test the prototype so stop asking, if he wants one tested he can ask you. Second of all i think 180 for attack lenght with a 1 year warratny would be a fair price. but they same very nice and come november i'll porb get one if you have them for sale

Actually if you knew anything about these shafts you'd know they're still being sold on Ebay every week or so. They may not be the "original" shafts, but they're essentially the exact same. . .

You can get something like it on Ebay, but its a carbon fiber/cevlar shaft. It was like $70 I think, just type in lacrosse shaft on Ebay and see if it comes up (its goldish and black).
