I'm thinking about making myself a wooden shaft but I'm just wondering, what would be the best wood to make it out of? Hickory? I don't really care about weight, in fact I want this thing to be pretty heavy.

hickory i get mine custom made by a friend he uses maple and i have only see one break and that one was 5 years old and cracked 8 times
Hickory is good i have one made of hickory but I dont use it anymore, it is pretty strong I used it for a season in box and only has a few dents in it. It is 31" long and weights 373 grams, just F.Y.I.

They hurt more than metal since they are more pliable.

I bought mine, so I couldn't tell you. I have some "galvanized paint protector thingy" something or other on mine, though.

theyre really simple to make. im just gonna get someone to cut it for me on a table saw to pretty close to what i want then im gonna file and sand it to what i want then maybe paint it and put a clear coat on it. i cant wait to beat people with this thing

if all ur gonna do is file and sand then this stick should be ready for ur kids kids. the fastest and best way is to use a lathe to turn the stick and start with a piece thats bigger then u want .and it can take 2 weeks just to get the top narrow enough for the head.

it'll take that long to file like 1/4 inch or so off?
