I saw this move in an old issue of IL a few days ago right before a game. It was pickup basically so i decided to try it out a few times. I was playing against mainly seniors and some juniors so i was at a big physical disadvantage (frosh) but i was surprised to find that this move worked about every time i pulled it. I was trying to go to my left the first time i did it, and essentially all i did was jog up to my defender and about 5 yards from him starting sprinting, more like a 3/4 run though, switching to my right hand simultaneously. Take 3 full steps after splitting, aiming for a spot about 3-5 feet off his left hip. Once there, plant hard with your outside foot, here your right, and split back to your left. Explode FULL speed now across your defenders' body.

I found this to be very effective because the defender has to open up his hips and react to your first split otherwise you can just continue in that direction and you will already have at least one step on him. If he does react, splitting across his body forces him to take either a very awkward step, or spin around and meet you on the other side of his body. You are almost guaranteed to have at least one step on him, but remember this dodge can be easily countered if the D manages to dislodge the ball, or you do the dodge too early or late.

Comment? What does anyone think of this idea? Anyone think of reasons why this dodge is stupid or easily defendable?

maybe when its done to me its not like your doing it but when people split dodge its usually at an angle and after their dodge i make physical contact with them so i dunno if he tried to dodge back that he would be able to or if it would do much

I use this move all the time, I found what helps is if your defender's feet and hips aren't straight trying to lead you in one direction, first split against his hips throwing off then split back. Also, watch some Shamel and Ramel Bratton highlights, they are very good at this.

well i have noticed that the basic idea is that it can be used regardless of which side your defender is leading you. I have just noticed that when you defend it properly it is very hard to stop.

Basically, give him a split dodge at a fairly high speed, to get him off balance and open his hips to you. Once he's pivoting to react to you, you split at full speed back to the original direction you were moving.

Use this a few times, and then pull this move: Split once, like stated before, then fake like you are splitting back, then keep going in the direction of your first split. Your defender will think you are going to double split, and you catch him off guard.

thats a good vid.....

i used to do exactly what he does but the problem is most defenders can't recognize the first split because he does it so quickly. I find that taking several steps in that direction is much more convincing and the defender basically has to open up his hips. But he is kyle harrison so i dont really have the right to criticize.

The main factor that plays into this move is timing. You have to execute the move close enough so that he HAS to open up his hip, but far enough where you have enough room to split back once he has opened up his hips. One thing that has helped me is just watch your defenders hips and chest, once you take your three steps and see is body turning to meet yours, thats when you split back.

split to roll is another

double roll is ok sometimes, but it can be slow asking for a double team

then....their is a split to swim, but i think swims are an invite for broken ribs:naughty:

bottom line is be inventive it is how basketball has grown to be as technical as it is these days. just be sure to practice it many times at home first.

well u if you only take the three steps after you split once you should be able to execute the entire move pretty quick it is definitely faster than a split to roll. Ill try to get a vid up but i takes basically the same amount of time than a regular combination dodge.
