Our school has a swim team, in which its mostly girls, and maybe 2 or 3 guys, so i am kind of skeptic about joining, because ill probably be ridiculed, but none the less, i do enjoy swimming, and in the summer i surf so i feel i am fairly good at it, I was wondering how much there is to gain from staying in shape through a swim team before lacrosse season, since swimming ends as lacrosse begins, and if it would be worth it for me to join?

Swim is an amazing exercise and does keep you in excellent shape, so I would say join as long as it doesn't interfere with your lacrosse preseason team workouts. As for the ridicule, I'd bet half the kids doing the ridiculing wouldn't be able to last on the swim team so just be the more mature one and ignore it, and hey, mostly girls? Thats a total plus.

Hey im joining dive team at my school this year myself. one thing i have heard is that if your a swimmer you become more tired during the lacrosse season. Im not sure of the reason exactly, its just what ive heard from my coach and a couple other swimmers/lax players.

Anyways. After seeing the kids onm the swim team swim for 4 hours or so a day and the muscles on some of em id say you will get in pretty nice shape

you will get in better shape, but you still need to run. your respiratory system will be in better shape but your legs will be dead after the warm up jog if you dont continue to run.

Swimming will get you in great shape. You will get a great aerobic base for lax season and you will definitely become stronger. The speedos you will find make your life easier; swimming in anything like boardshorts will literally make your practice a living hell...not to mention it makes it harder to swim in a straight line. Be sure to run some though, because you exercise different muscles in swimming than you do while running. But aerobically (sp?) you should be more than set.

BTW, just be glad that your team is predominantly made of girls. In Wisconsin, guys and girls have completely differents seasons. Therefore, practices are one massive sausagefest. If you've got any questions about swimming, shoot me a PM and I'll try and help you out.

I don't know, but at least in our school swimming a very respected sport. It's kind of accepted as the hardest sport in our school.

yeah its completely oposite at ours, atleast last year it was. last year if a guy did swimming they were considered gay, idk.

this year dosent seem to bad, i told most of my friends that i was doing it and i havent gotten anything about it so far.

there has been a thread on this, check it out.

Also I played water polo during fall when I was back in cali. It was the best choice I have made in my life in reguards to work outs. Not because it got me in better shae, but because it changed my work out ethic. I learned to push myself

who cares what others say, they are probly just jealous because they can't swim as well as you. you should definately join, and it really helps stay in shape.

Swimming is one of the best sports. It will definitely help you keep in shape for lax, and if you do kickboard drills in practice, it will keep your legs in great running shape, too. And don't worry about the speedo thing - it's part of the normal/required gear for the sport just like anything else. Nobody makes fun of football players for wearing tights....

yeah, were 3 practices into the season now and everything is going great, i already feel better like im in better shape than i was 3 days ago, and i keep improving. we do kickboard drills and that helps alot, ive really been enjoying it, the speedo thing is not really bad at all, its just hyped up to be something that it really isnt, and as far as getting made fun of, it hasnt happened yet, so so far swimming is awesome

bottom line i'd reccomend it for anyone tryin to get in shape for lax season

Nice, man. Yeah, it's great, and the more often you swim, the easier it gets and the better you get.
I tried to swim some hard laps in board shorts last week and they kept almost slipping off because of the drag when i shove off the wall.

i swimm.... practices are hell, and i mean... hell.... but you will be in top shape for lacrosse... and once you get into the game and just play phenomenal the winter swims may be worth it... but they weren't for me... well at least i had fun

I don't but I have heard horror stories about the before and after school practices.

yeah some of the dry land workouts that you will do will really get your core strong. but as mentioned you need to keep running. and don't abandon your stick skills, keep up on the off hand

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying swimming. Our season also began on Monday. All I can say the 5 practices we've had over the past 3 days have made me more tired and sore than I've ever been in my life haha.

But like others have said, it's key that you keep running and playing wallball. The muscles you use while kicking are different than running. It may not seem like it, but if you don't run at all during the winter, I guarantee you will regret it come spring.

i might as well post on here.

Do it. I swam for my junior year. Its the season before, so it gets you in shape. I would say, its the most difficult high school sport out there (endurance wise). If you do it right, you should be dead tired after each practice. It tones your muscles of you are not toned. if you want to gain weight, its still possible, just eat ALOT after.

also, you probably wont wear a speedo, i think they call the suit for guys, "jammers"? like tight shorts.
