4 attack 4 defense 9 middies.
You'll need a good amount of middies because they get tired quite quickly and the more lines you have the more rest they'll get allowing them to perform better. You don't realy need many attack man. 4 is quite sufficient, just incase one gets a penalty or is injured. 4 defensemen should be sufficient too, though more would be better. Middies also play into the condition of the defense. If the middies are tired they'll get burnt leaving more work for the defense.

In addition to the 3 close D, you need an extra guy to play long stick if you so choose (which most people wisely do). Although mustang, you didn't mention a goalie. I guess what he's going to have to look at is someone playing another position filling in as backup goalie if needed. That's going to make it 4/4/8/1. And then if a longstick gets a penalty, you're screwed on the man-down. But 17 is gonna be tough no matter what.

Last year our JV team had 20 players. 4 attack, 10 middies (1fogo) 5 defense (1LSM) and 1 goalie. Our goalie never was injured but if he did get injured I would be his replacement. I also have experience at D and so did a few of our middies. Not many team have the luxury of players playing multiple positions. So yeah playing with 17 players is going to be pretty rough

I agree that carrying 9 middies is important especially when the weather gets hot. We carried 9 last year and many games were fairly close in the first half but we pulled away from everyone in the second half because we had fresh legs.

attack
6 midies (3 lines of 2 guys)
2 o middies
2 lsm
3 close d
1 goalie
it sets up so the 3 sets of midi lines run up and down a couple times than get off. but you also have 1 midi just playing o and the lsm playing d in case you have certain guys that want to play attack or d. thats what i have had to do before and it works well. its a little confusing at first but if you want i can pm you and explain better.

only problem with that monm is that its harder to get guys who play well together to be in the game at same time. If you have 3 lines of 3 with the middies, than you can keep guys that play well together on the field together hopefully producing more efficiency and more goals

well it worked for our team cause nobody wanted to be a team player and if they didn't get to play attack they complained to their parents and i got an ear full. but yeah it depends on the makeup of your team and how well everyone works togeather

thats what happens when you have hotshot jackasses who think they know better than the coach. I'd bench them say F U to the parents and let them think it over for a game. Let the parents know that you are the coach and that is up to you who plays where and when.

no it is for field. there is always 3 midies but 1 midie always plays o and in transition runs off for an lsm and on o the lsm runs off for a shortie middie. the other two guys on the line play both o and d
