we are starting out a new team at my school no one has played and we were wondering if our defense should start out with long poles or short poles our first game is in like 4 weeks we get 3 practices a week so they would have to learn with a short stick then with a long one so should we start them out with long poles or short ones

Use poles. Your just going to screw them over when the day before the game they switch to someting twice as long. If your lucky some of them will be naturals, its how it was for me, I was a mediocre at best middie and I switched to D and it was like playing an entirely different game. S definitely get those boys on poles.

because if you dont have them the attack will burn you because they are probally gonna be faster than most d and they can just get up colse and spin past you if they are big enough to fight through your poke checks

Who is "He"?
The point of a long pole is a longer reach. That way you can keep more of a cushion between you and the guy you're guarding, leaving you more time to react when they make a move.
"He" needs to read a lacrosse book. Past age 8, the d should have long poles.

so u can try ot check ur opponent and if u dont use d poles for the defences postions it might be illegal ( that is why u use long poles)

Im not a coach, however im am a captain and i do talk alot about how to run the defense with my coach, becuase i do play defense. My coach and I both agree to start the more experienced "D" with a long pole and the others with a short, depending on how old ur kids are u could also just cut the shaft down a foot or so, this would basically be the best of both worlds, that is what many of the new defense on the team i play on started with.
good luck with the situatuion,
