WINGS PRESS RELEASE:
BUFFALO, NY - The Philadelphia Wings (4-5) defeated the East Division leading Buffalo Bandits (5-3) by a score of 14-8 at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY. The Wings return to the turf to meet the Minnesota Swarm in their next game on Saturday, March 5 at Wachovia Center at 8 p.m.
"We put four quarters together which was our goal," said Wings' General Manager and Head Coach Lindsay Sanderson. "We shut Buffalo out in the fourth quarter which was big. These guys played a full game and put together a great effort."
Philadelphia scored the first goal of the game by Dan Marohl at 1:16. Buffalo scored three straight, with one goal by Mike Hominuck and two by Dan Teat. The Wings then went on a four-goal run with scoring from Keith Cromwell, Marc Morley, Cromwell, and Jeff Ratcliffe. John Tavares netted the final goal of the quarter for the Bandits at 12:28. At the end of the first quarter Philadelphia held a 5-4 lead.
Buffalo started the scoring in the second quarter with a Jason Crosbie goal at 2:09. Ratcliffe scored his second of the night for the Wings to put his team up by one. Buffalo then scored two straight goals (Crosbie, Teat) to put the Bandits up by one. Philadelphia finished the half with goals by Bryan Barrett and Andrew Burkholder to give the Wings an 8-7 lead going into halftime. Wings' goaltender Dallas Eliuk had 21 saves in the first half while Bandits' goaltender Derek General had 16.
Ratcliffe netted the hat trick at 6:54 in the third quarter. The Wings extended their lead to three when Marohl scored his second of the night. But Buffalo cut the Wings lead to two again with just 1:11 left when A.J. Shannon netted a power play goal. At the end of three quarters of play, the Wings held a 10-8 lead.
The Wings Cromwell scored his hat trick at the start of the fourth quarter to increase the Wings lead to three. Morley scored short-handed at 5:57 to put the Wings up by four followed by Cromwell's fourth goal of the night. The Wings Jeff Spano scored an empty net goal at 11:39 to extend Philadelphia's lead by six and give the Wings a 14-8 win over the Bandits. Wings' goaltender Dallas Eliuk made 50 saves on the night while the Bandits' Derek General made 28.
Leading the Wings in scoring were Keith Cromwell with eight points (4G, 4A), Marc Morley with five points (2G, 3A), Jeff Ratcliffe with four points (3G, 1A), Andrew Burkholder with three points (1G, 2A), Dan Marohl with two goals, and Bryan Barrett and Jeff Spano each with two points (1G, 1A).
Notes: Three members of the Philadelphia Wings head to Calgary tonight to participate in the National Lacrosse League All-Star Game tomorrow. Goaltender Dallas Eliuk, forward Tom Marechek, and defenseman Thomas Hajek have been chosen as members of the East Squad. The game will be show live locally on NBC 10 at 2 p.m.
