I'm happy that Lacrosse had exposure once again on National Network TV, but the NLL and Indoor/Box lacrosse is a Canadian game based on Hockey, another Canadian sport.. If you really look at the rosters all of the best players are Canadian and all of the best teams are pretty much all Canadian.. Its an entirely different game.. I am a season ticket holder for the Anaheim Storm, but I don't go to the games, I just give the tickets away.. I really think they need to use the college rules for the goalies.. thats the only thing that really bothers me is the fact that the goalie's padding looks ridiculous.. its too much..

The game really is made for the Canadian/Hockey fan crowd. The goalies even use hockey masks. And, I bet you NBC probably signed this TV deal to grab some hockey fans during the lockout. Even the announcers kept making references to the NHL and hockey greats (for example, comparing Gary Gait to Mario Lemieux was a compliment but a little unnecessary). Canadians are born and bred to play box, while Americans grow up playing field. It's why there aren't many Americans playing (and why one of America's best, Casey Powell, isn't the tremendous player like he is in field). Goalie's play very much like hockey goalies, using their body to make saves, and rarely their sticks.

I agree with hbmedic. Even NHL goalies have less padding on. However, I would not make goalies wear the traditional chest pad gloves and helmet that field players wear. Box Lacrosse has its own unique fundamentals just as much as field lacrosse does, the goalie being one of them. Maybe decreasing the size of the pads would be a better choice. The way goalies, such as we saw with Dallas Eliuk today, use their bodies so much that it's necessary to use more then just a chest pad and helmet. It's impossible to change that much of a necessity in box lacrosse. It would be like telling goalies that they can't move out from the crease. I think also recently in the NHL they made a rule for decreasing the size of goalie's...uhh...leg pads? (sorry, I'm a Bruins fan but not much of a hockey buff). But like I said before, goalies to an extent need to keep that padding, since its apart of the game's fundamentals.

Did I seriously forget/not know that this was on TV today? I'm so pissed off I sat here doing nothing when I could have been watching that.

Will it be on again/anyone tape it?

If it was going to be on again it will probably be on really late at night, or really early tomorrow morning

Alright, I think its obvious that boxla is not field lax. But to say that its just hockey on turf is incorrect. Yes, there are similarities, and yes right now a lot of the really good players are Canadian. But I was recently talking to a scout for the Minnesota Swarm, and the player he was raving about from the San Jose Stealth wasn't a Canadian player, it was Ryan Boyle.

Trust me, the American players are quickly learning this game, and the old Canadian systems are slowly getting squeezed out of the league. In fact, the Arizona Sting, Anaheim Storm, and San Jose Stealth do not play a Canadian style of box. Basically, what they're doing in their games is playing a small scale of field lacrosse inside a box. Put some years in that system, and it will be just as effective as the old Canadian style.

You have teams like Calgary, Philly and Minnesota all play a modified Canadian/American system, and each does it in a different way. It shows that over a given period of time, different American systems can mesh with Canadian systems. This is easier to learn for American players, and will eventually become the new wave of box styled lacrosse.

Now don't get discouraged about how box is played. Canadians have dominated the game in the past. Now, there is a definite American influence in the game. Most Canadians now even play field lax in college. They spend their summers playing in the WLA or OLA in junior leagues, but while they're in college, they're playing field. This is helping the evolution of the game, since present day NLL coaches have recognized that even their most skilled Canadian players are learning the field game. To mesh the field skills in with the box skills...it has changed the game already and has made it so much more interesting and fun to watch.

Yes, the NLL is Canadian boxla, but it has become oh so much more!

I noticed that the players never switched hands. In a lot of situations if they would switch theyd have a huge lane to that side. It was nice to see some lacrosse on a huge network like NBC. Its growing.

In box, its not that beneficial to switch hands.

Most players who can switch hands use that skill up around the key, but rarely have the time or space to do it around the crease. As you saw in the game, its very congested around the crease, and you have very little time to even think, let alone shoot. Might as well just stick with your strongest shooting hand, and look for the over the shoulder shot if you can't get the overhand or underhand shot.

Ya i seen the packed in crowd on the crease, but when they have the ball up top they get forced to the outside and they have a huge lane in the middle. Im sure if they're in the NLL they have a strong enough off hand to switch and get a good pass off or even a good shot.

Hooligan

Its better to use a pass in that case. Offense is usually choriographed (sp?). As you're rolling through for a pass, there's someone who's heading for the net up the middle.

It's a different game. People need to get over it. There's the MLL for the field
fans. Stop trying to convert box to field. As far as the goalie equipment, it's as
much safety as anything. Despite their size, the NLL still averages 25 goals/game.
Is that not enough? Besides, 100mph from 9ft away hmmmm.......

I enjoyed watching the allstar game yesterday but I still prefer the field game. I can't put my finger on why exactly. The NLL was exciting, the transition game was great, there was huge plays made all over the field. Yet I still felt like something was missing. I have the game on tape so I'm going to watch it again and see if I still feel the same way. I would, without doubt, watch it if on TV and attend games if I had a chance, just given the option, I would still pick field over box.

After watching the game live and taking part in all of the festivities surrounding the game (Breakfast, U-15 game between Canada and USA, Skills competition, and party @ Dutton's inside the Saddledome), I can say that was $40 well spent for one day. Meeting the players after the game is a HUGE bonus.

As well, I found that even though it was a great game to watch, the second half was better than the first.

That was a great game and calgary really knows how to put on an awesome event. Breakfast at the dome was great. The game was awesome my highlight of the game would be the last half. at the end of the game is was pretty much a goalie duel between Gee Nash and Dallas Eliuk because they both just came up with masive save after save. Also since i was in calgary i ended up spend over $300 at mountain edge lax because i cat go in there without buying stuff.

The game was good, there were lots of great chances. But all-in-all the guys weren't wanting to hit eachother because alot of them were teammates playing against eachother.

The skills comp was really tense. I didn't get to stay for the whole thing, I had lacrosse at 3:30. But Kaleb Toth and Mark Steenhuis put on quite the show in the running event.

My favorite part of the whole thing was being one of the fortunate few playing infront of the crowd in the saddledome as "team Canada" and showing those guys from San Jose why Lacrosse is Canada's national sport! The final score for the U-15's "Canada VS USA" was 10 - 1 for canada!!!!

Should be as good or better with more on the line. The all-star game is for
"entertainment value", but they definitely put more into it than the NHL game
or the Pro-Bowl etc.

Heard the game pulled a "1 share" for TV ratings. Not bad, considering the only advertisement NBC pulled for the game was to NLL fans. Hopefully its enough to keep the sport on TV.

I heard that too. It was Bryan Shanahan (yes, Brendan's brother). Pretty stupid
thing for any announcer to say. Push the limits maybe, play aggressive or
something, but to say lax players purposelt cheat doesn't really put a positive
spin on the game :concerned
