I am standing in for our starting coach this weekend for our youth team (1st game) and need some quick pointers:
-What/how is the best way to change lines and individual players? Do I need possession? Do I ask for a horn? Can I send kids on the fly?
-Any other advice?
Many Thanks!

The easiest way to switch out players is to get a horn, so that you don't have to wait for a player to come off to put another on. If you ask for a horn, they don't have to give it to you. I believe you'll be able to use a horn any time the ball goes out on the sidelines, but I'm not sure about the endlines.
You can send your kids in on the fly during the game at any time, but it's best to wait until you're on offense. Have your o work it around and sub middies 1 at a time. Don't sub on defense or in transition.

Kevin is correct. We only sub full lines on faceoffs, or horns... The referee will hold his arms up in the air asking if you want it, then you just tell the bench. Depending on how much coaching you will actually do during the game, you may want to enlist a friend to do the box coaching (subbing). I recommend giving the younger kids colors instead of #'s for the lines... They don't get discouraged as much. Good luck, but you will also sub on the fly, only on offense. We get the ball on offense, and call ORANGE to get the offense to hold the ball, while we sub. Try not to send to many off at one time. I nearly killed my team yesterday. I called orange, and every middie wanted off, leaving us 3v6. Good thing they didn't take advantage of it... Gotta love a smart attackmen that brings the ball back to X.
