I know what u mean about watson, he was gettin raped on breakaways allnight and I dont think he wil do too much better this year, phil has been ridin the pine too much and Im sure he will do well when sanderson decieds to put him in..........

But watson was never as good as he was hyped to be.....

he had great defense in front which has now retired and been traded away....period.

he has always dropped and flopped, and guys tear him up from the outside, he drops the shuolders low...

common I have seen grant have his way with him and same with marechek.

but, I do not believe there is someone better available....

He is a money goalie, and did you guys already forget the week before vs 'chester?

basically he got torn up on breakaways....you DO NOT TURN THE BALL OVER TO BUFFALO, THEY ARE QUICK AND NASTY with Shannon and Steenhuis dishing to Tavares.....

hence the loss... I wonder, since i missed the game for the first time in rock history, how many terrible shots doyle turned over or how many stupid plays happened on 'O' and how this Jr. B calibre defense played.

*wipes away tear*

I never thought I'd see the day a Toronto Rock fan would say that. For years I've been saying the same thing about Watson, only to have hundreds of blind fans telling me I was an idiot.

I'm going to hang your post over my computer PGR!

You're not an idiot in thinking that Watson is not Dallas, or Gee Nash, or even Cosmo in terms of being one of the best pure shot blockers in the game. He also can get cut up from outside shots at times, we've all seen it.

However - He's still top tier, no matter what anyone says. All you have to do is look at his stopping 71 of 77 shots in Rochester to steal the 2003 championship from a heavily favoured team. Until someone tops that clinic, he's still the best money goalie in pro lacrosse, IMO. There's only two or three in the league I'd start over Watson.

Also, it's a funny time to start criticizing him - He played brilliantly last week against Rochester (something like 9 or 10 goals on about 50 shots?), and very well last night (13 on 57 shots).

How many 5 on 5 goals did Buffalo actually score? Most were scored by a rushing d-man or by the first guy off the bench in transition. These are high percentage plays when the rushing d-men are McCready, Shannon or Steenhuis, and the first guy off the bench is Tavares, Crosbie, Shannon, or Teat). Watson even stopped a bunch of the breakaways. With that many fast break opportunities, I'd say 13 goals allowed on 57 shots is a damn good performance (58th shot was an empty net goal).

So, Rock lost because they didn't finish well enough in their 5-on-5 offense, and because of Buffalo capitalizing on bad turnovers and slow O to D changes.......This is Watson's fault how???

Hell, even the 5-on-5 defense was decent.....I really think that all the Rock need to do better is to get Doyle and Sanderson off the floor faster when the O's taking a low percentage shot with the shot clock ticking down.

Watson is on the same tier as any other goalie in the NLL. He has rings to prove it. Sure he had some great teams in front of him, but, c'mon, they didn't hold opponents to no shots. He has faced the best and beat them. It's just too bad Sanderson is making a spot for all of his sons to make some money. You watch them come in over the next few years. The Gates' their not. Daddy's going to look after his boys at the expense of the team. Don't blame the goalie. (that's easy) Figure out why he's getting as many shots as he is.

Not trying to discount Watson's efforts. You're right that he's got all the stats and rings to prove he's one of the best. But his skill level has declined, and his defense has been exiled. What results is his stats and team have shown the signs of the changes. Les Bartley drafted Anthony Cosmo as the replacement for Watson. Cos spent all those years as a backup on purpose, so that he could learn the system, and also get some game time under less than stressful situations.

Now, you have the Rock's future in San Jose. Any change at goalie will require another veteran (to maintain a winning level) or a fast learning rookie, who you can somehow get your hands on.

Watson is one of the top tiered goalies, but he's not the best in the last 5 years, let alone the best ever. But he and that defense were the hardest to score on. There's where your stats and rings come into play. Ask the Knighthawks what has plagued them about the Rock over the recent years, and they'll tell you that its been that tenatious defense.

Now, under Sanderson, you have a totally different philosophy. We're seeing a similar scheme in Philly, with Lindsay Sanderson. Offense is the main focus, while defense comes with the situation. The Sanderson ideal is to score more points than the other team, instead of trying to keep your opponent from scoring.

My previous post was geared towards the hoard of people (on other boards) who have spent valuable minutes of their lives trying to convince me that Watson is indeed the best goalie ever. Well, I've been spoiled over the years, having seen the single best athletic box goalie of all time, in Dallas Eliuk. But even with that single fact, you could still argue that other goalies have more proof of their greatness to outdo Eliuk's prowess. But ask around the locker room of any NLL team, and ask the guys which goalie they would want to play against, or score on, so they can tell their kids about it, would be old Dallas.

Does that prove greatness? I'll allow his highlight reels to tell that story.

Forgot about this.

Just when you thought you had the answers, Terry Sanderson changed the questions. Watson's a workhorse and is good for a couple more years. Josh Sanderson was exactly the spark that Toronto's O needed....I think only John Tavares could have done more to improve that attack.

Since the season's now over, I'm going to suggest that the trade that sent Shawn Williams to Rochester and Casey Powell to Buffalo was actually the dumbest.

I know that Watson has seen his fair share of ups and downs and I have doubted his abiiities at times but he has always managed to come through in the clutch for the Rock regardless of who their D is. He was an iron man this season. And to think it was only a year ago that he lead Brampton to a Mann Cup win and everyone was praising his play in that.
Sure Cosmo could have been starting for the Rock right now too but there is no way that Watson couldn't be starting. In my books he deserves some consideration for MVP this season holding the Rock in some games until the offense showed up.

too bad that the Whipper pretty much saved the game yesterday for the Rock - if he wasn't there it could have possibly swung the other way for the Sting. He is invaluable to the team. The saves he made were just outstanding. Seems that he always has to let the first goal in of the game and then he comes on strong.
I can't believe he wasn't the game MVP.

^^Way to revive an out-dated thread, guys.

Fact - Watson was lousy, by his standards, during the first three quarters

Fact - When the game was close late in the third, he shut the door and won the game.....almost 20 shut-out minutes!

Really only two nice goals by Maddelena in the whole 4th if I remember right

Not a great overall game for Watson (for a great one, see Rochester 2003 - 6 goals on 71 shots). Still, a clutch performance when it was needed.

There's only one goalie in the world I'd start over Watson for a playoff game, and that's Eliuk, and that's only for another year or so.
