NOoooooooooOOOO! I had MD picked for this game all across the board. They were my confidence pick I think.

Where did Duke come from!?!?! Sounds like MD lost momentum.

Looks like maybe the defense for UMD came back to earth this week. The offense has got to light it up!

From Inisde Lacrosse:

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - It was easy to look at Duke's 5-8 record last year and
the 3-0 hole it found itself in to No. 4 Maryland after the first quarter at UM's Lacrosse and Field Hockey Complex on Saturday and assume the No. 14 Devils were going to rack up their fifth straight ACC loss.

But this isn't nearly the same Duke team as a year ago. The fleet of freshmen starters are now sophomores, and the experience shows.

Duke battled back to score three straight in the second quarter and then five
straight in the third and fourth quarters to surprise Maryland with a 10-8
win in front of more than 1,000 fans.

Devils' freshmen Zack Greer, held quiet most of the day by Maryland senior
Gavin Webb, slipped away for back-to-back goals early in the fourth quarter to give Duke a 9-6 lead that proved insurmountable for the Terps. Duke (4-0) also got two goals from sophomore attackman Matt Danowski, junior middie Kyle Dowd and senior middie Matt Zash and 16 saves by senior goalie Aaron Fenton.

Junior attackman Joe Walters led Maryland (1-1) with three goals.

"This is huge," said Fenton. "We didn't have a big win all of last year so it feels good. Starting the season 4-0 gives us a lot of confidence."

Beating a Maryland team that dominated Georgetown last week is impressive,
but the way in which the Devils did it illustrated a lot about their resolve.
The Terps pretty much doubled Duke's shots (50-26) and groundballs (52-23), won the face-off battle (12-8) and even had four more man-up chances (7-4).

In the end, though, Duke had the advantage when it counted most. After
Greer's two goals gave the Devils the three-goal lead with 12:13 remaining, Maryland fought back to cut the lead to one with 5:35 left on goals by junior middie Brendan Healy and Walters (man-up). Sophomore goalie Harry Alford (eight saves) even gave the Terps more momentum 25 seconds later by making a diving, horizontal save on an empty net of a Danowski shot

Maryland hammered away for the next two minutes and sophomore attackman Mike Phipps (two goals) found himself open on the doorstep at the 2:33 mark but Fenton saved his attempt and Duke cleared and called timeout. A minute later Dowd scored to exhaust Maryland's chances.

"We started a little slow but that seems to be our thing this year," said Greer, who now has 16 goals in his first four NCAA games. "We fought back, stuck to the game plan and got the W."

Fenton and the defense were a huge part of that, holding Maryland to a lower total than when they played UMBC (a 12-10 Duke win) last week. The only senior in the starting lineup, Fenton leads a defensive group that includes junior David Evans (who covered Phipps most of the day), and sophomores Nick O'Hara (junior middie Bill McGlone), Casey Carroll (junior attackman Xander Ritz) and Tony McDevitt (Walters).

"We played great defense in the second half," said Duke coach Mike Pressler. "To hold Maryland to three goals in the second half on the road was impressive for our defensive guys."

Maryland's defense went the other way, dominating Duke in the first quarter before loosening up the rest of the way. Sophomore Steve Whittenberg, however, stood out, doing a solid job on Danowski most of the day. Danowski's assist came on a man-up chance in the second quarter and one of his goals came on a fastbreak at the end of the first half.

The Devils received good support from their midfield, which is important for them since their top three scorers coming into the game were attackmen. Zash and sophomore Peter Lamade worked mostly against the longpole, initiating much of Duke's offense.
