Ok, sometimes I'll be talking online and what have you, and then I notice some technophiliac starts bombarding me with insults. The thing is, I don't always know if I'm being insulted because I don't know what half of the words mean. There's one thing that I've never been able to figure out. Does anybody know what the hell 1337 means? Anyone else got any 'words' they can't figure out.
And don't worry, as long as you don't flame me for being a n00b, I promise no one will go serval on you and own all your base for knowing this stuff. w00t!

l337 means "leet", short for "elite."
the wister

Well that clears that up, but opens a new can of worms. What is this obsession with elite? For instance, I don't see sweet, awesome, godly, it's always elite.

It was mostly coupled with h4x0r, (I r teh l337 h4x0r). Basically meaning I'm an elite hacker. Which sounds a lot more badarse than saying I'm an awesome hacker! or sweet hacker!

It's just a nerd culture thing. For instance, some folks just say "y'all" instead of "you guys", or "pop" instead of "soda."
Another one: pwn
It is pronounced and used in the place of "own", and means "dominated" or "make a fool out of." It originally came about in a Quake tournament, where one of the top players in the world simply misspelled "own", and has been assimilated into the nerd culture.

Really? I had always been told it meant power owned, didn't make much since to me though.
Also theres the hacker alphabet (which varies.
A=4, B=b (most of the time unless you get creative),C=(... basically just use anything but the normal letter if you can. This is often called l337 speak.

So I'm a little out of it, but what does the "<3" mean? Is that a heart? Because everytime I see someone write "I <3 something-something," all I see are testicles.

dont confuse Powned with Owned, they are clearly different, here is an example of being owned,
