Who is the greatest goalie of all time? I think Sal Locasio was the best.

I don't know too much about any of them since they were before my time, save TJ. Can you provide stats for them, and awards received? I know Tillmann was POY, 4X AA, Goalie of the Year, "Baller Status", etc. I know Sal Locascio (sp) is in the Hall of Fame, and Cattrano plays for Philly. TJ is the only one I've ever seen play, though. I dunno.

Cat is in incredible shape for a man his age. That, coupled with the fact that he's the only guy to compete as a goalie in all 4 championships in MLL history, and he's won 2 rings as a goalie...not to even mention the accomplishments as a college and high school goalie.
Personally, I view him as the best in the game right now.

Gotta give it to Cat, but Tillman is the "Next great goalie."

Sal Locascio
Sal LoCascio is one of the most dominant goalies the sport has seen. LoCascio was a four-time All-American at the University of Massachusetts and played for the winning US Team in the 1990, 1994 and 1998 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships. He was named the outstanding goalie at the 1994 championships. He helped Long Island Hofstra to four United States Club Lacrosse Association (USCLA) championships, was the USCLA player of the year in 1995, was a six-time all-pro with the New York Saints of the National Lacrosse League and helped the Long Island Lizards to the inaugural Major League Lacrosse championship in 2001. LoCascio also served as a head coach in both the NLL and MLL. In 2004, LoCascio guided the Philadelphia Barrage as their head coach to their first-ever MLL championship. He has previously been inducted into the US Lacrosse Long Island Chapter Hall of Fame.
Greg Cattrano
Cat, a two-time Major League Lacrosse All-Star starter, holds a league best 22-9 career ledger. His 56 groundballs on the year was second only on the Bayhawks squad, behind face-off specialist Paul Cantabene. He also posted a season-best 25 saves twice, both on the road, at Bridgeport and New Jersey. Cattrano set the Baltimore record for saves in 2001 when he turned away 31 shots in a 12-9 loss at Bridgeport. On July 4 of this season, he set a Baltimore record for fewest goals allowed in a game when he limited Boston to six goals in a 15-7 Baltimore victory. NCAA’s Goalie of the Year as a senior in 1997. A two-time All-American, he holds the NCAA record for goals scored by a goalie with three in his four year career at Brown.
Brian Dougherty (Doc)
One of the game's great goalies, Brian Dougherty is in his first year with Long Island after having started the last two in Rochester. Dougherty is a former U.S. Team member and Final Four MVP (1995) and NCAA Goalie of the Year (1996) as a Maryland Terrapin. Doc is also one of the most colorful characters in the sport.
Not my own words, taken from several different sites.

Sal.
Not only was he good at field he was good at box too. No other keeper can say they were that good at both.
Cat is the best field keeper. But no offense to the man...isnt a box goalie.
Dallas Eliuk is the best box goalie. But he can't play field.

Tillman Johnson is what I think the greatest goalie, he made like 35 saves in his first game.
Some kid was trying to argue that Trevor Tierney was better than anyone. The kid obviously knew nothing about Tillman's games. Tillman is the ultimate clutch player. Like Tom Brady. Amazing. I haven't seen Sal play, however, so I can't say he's the best in the game. But Tillman is just inspirational. I've met Tierney. I'll be meeting Tillman. I wasn't excited about Tierney, but Tillman has me all excited. WOOHOO!

Sal LoCascio has to be the best to play goal in both box and field.
As for a pure box goalie, it's Dallas Eliuk, enough said!!!
When it comes to field, I would put Chris Sanderson and Jeff Gombar up there with Tillman Johnson and Trevor Tierney.

trevor tierneys good but no one has mentioned Matt Russel! i think if he has another great year, he could be compared with Sal Locasio, Greg Cattrano, Brian Dougherty, Brian Carcattera and Tillman Johnson

I wouldn't consider Doc, Tierney, or Russell up to the quality of Cat and Sal...TJ maybe but he still has to prove himself more in the MLL.
Russell is good in NCAA but would have to continue to be good after.
Tierney put up lousy numbers in MLL last year, and IMO will only be a backup goalie. Doc is like John Franco. To outsiders he looks decent (numbers), but actually to watch him play leaves alot to be desired. He lost his temper a number of times last year, at least once costing them the game. On another occasion he scored on himself (ball rolled out of his stick in his own goal) that cost them the game (LI was down by 1 with about 1 minute left). I don't wanna diss the man...as I believe he has the potential to get back to great form...On a good note...I have heard he has gotten in shape this year, and I would love to see him play better (even though he'll be in Philly)

Cat is unbelievable.....
Although I personally thought that Mickey Jarboe of Navy fame was the greatest- consistently spectacular and solid carrying the ball- 2 time 1st team AA-
Not taking anything away from Sal, Charlie Brown, Jose Olivero, Larry Quinn, Rodney Rullman, Tillman Johnson, Pat Mcguiness, Doc, George Slabowski or somemore of the great goalies......
Oh by the way- Go Army.....Beat the living _ _ _ _ out of Navy.........

Mickey Jarboe and Billy Daye are 2 AMAZING goalies not on the poll. Not to mention, Chris Surran from Syracuse (1993) was also quite spectacular.

I'll second Chris Surran, and also add Scott Bacigalupo and Matt Palumb. Those guys were awesome to watch.

Paul Schmoler (sp?), Baccigalupo (sp?), and Quint Q. All great goalies. LoCascio is the greatest though.

outta this list definitley gave it to my man cattrano...but i believe jay pffeifer(sp?) should be up...last yr as a 5th year senior he was th eonly reasons cuse one any games in my opinion...towards the end of their season i know he was really sloppy but you gotta think of everything the guys gone through & look past a bad wk cause everyone has them...think about the previous championships & huge saves hes made....jay is definitley not done w/ his lacrosse career

This is a two man race and TJ is not one of those 2. It's Sal or Cat and I gave it to Cat because of his ability to clear the ball by himself if need be and his overall athleticism. As far as stopping the ball no one is better than sal was in his prime. no one. the rest of these guys arent fit to back up the net for Sal and Cat. Game over.

Psh Keith, say that to Doc's face, or I should rather say, have Eric do it barside. Angry fat Irish men...scary.
It really depresses me that the 2nd most popular pick is Tillman Johnson. Really. Show yourselves, fools. I could even argue that Cat at the tender age of 30 is better than TJ right now in his prime. My god. I hope all of you sinners knew who Sal Locasio was when you voted for TJ.
My nod goes to Sal. Sure, he wasn't the most athletic goalie and Cat will likely have a greater career, but during Sal's prime, he was the definition of a brick wall. And he could do it both indoor and outdoor. I don't think there will be a goalie for awhile who can do that.

03-13-2006, 10:06 PM
Sal Locasio would be my pick from the pole, He is by far the greatest keeper of all time.
I was suprised to see only 1 person mention Chris Sanderson, He was a shot stopping manchine at the 98 worlds. And he also got picked as the all world keeper over Locasio.
A name i will throw out there as one of the great's is Murry Keene of Australia he played in 90,94,98 and was all world in 90. He is a fantastic keeper and if he was in his prime now would no doubt be playing MLL. So some of you old timers may have seen him play i doubt any of the kids on here would have.

I love how Tillman Johnson is nearly winning this. I have a lot of respect for him, but he cannot even consider being called the greatest goalie ever. He still has too much to prove. He didn't even make the U.S. team. So, to everyone who's "Voting for Tillman just because he's the only one I've seen play", stop it.

Tillman Johnson should not be in the same conversation with Sal Locasio. Sal was the best of his time and maybe even the best ever. All of the people who are voting for Tillman probably never even saw these other goalies play. In that case dont vote on this poll.

You guys don't have a clue although the call on LoCasio are justifiable and Cattrano is also a top 5 goalie...best goalie since the NCAA made it a sport is Larry Quinn...the fact he isn't even in the poll is appalling....when you create a poll next time try to do some homework.

sal has my vote for his play in both box & field. his box play was even more outstanding in that his old ny saints defense was known to be among the most porous in the mill/nll. sal saw a ton of quality shots and was at times the only one back there keeping the saints in the game.
philly fans loved ragging him during a game but i don't know any of us that didn't respect him.
the chris sanderson is interesting because his tenure in the nll was iffy at best. he got pulled alot as his game became unglued often and eventually couldn't get a place in the nll. but put him in fielkd, and he was a damn good goalie.

come on now. you all are forgetting some of the best to ever play. and the #1 goalie of all time is none other than larry quinn, forgetting mike federico, tom sears, rodney rullman, bob rule, bill beroza... i could go on and on... throw in all of the greats from naz, like gebby, benji, and coon, the gulls with big e miller, betch... wac's slomkowski and taibl noke's pilat, mason, fleming and gordo. blah, blah, blah...

516, as UNC says, most of the people here are in HS or younger, so tilman and russel are all they know. Rulman, Rule and Beroza are in many cases their parents ages (or older)
id have to do with larry quinn, quint kessnich, or maybe locasio. but i never saw rulman, rule or beroza play (altho i watched that lax foundation video with them 10,000 times) so its hard for me to rate them.
Guys,
Bob Rule invented the modern plastic goalie stick as we know it today, you all need to say "oh, my god, Bob, thanks for saving my butt" if you ever get the chance to meet him.
i know i will

But hasn't everyone here seen Cattrano play? Cattrano at least deserves 20 votes ahead of Tillman. In fact, since Cattrano has played in EVERY MLL Championship game, odds are you've seen him play more than Tillman.
spenny
03-18-2006, 11:02 AM
well, i was thinking about the college game since rulman and co didnt have the chance to play after. tilman was just an above average goalie in college (who played big when it mattered the most, since hes moved to the MLL, hes learned to play that way in every game.)
but you are right about cat. hes the best in the pro game today. i know that larry quinn and maybe quint would have been just as good and imho better
