View Full Version : Do people actually wear all this crap?

I was looking through the latest CommLax catalog and the shoulder pads and stuff are freaking huge. I mean does anyone wear the gladiator shoulderpads with the matching liner, rib pads and big *** elbow pads? All the shoulder pads have huge cups (and price to go along) that just look like they would be annoying. Or are these pads sold to make overprotective parents feel better.

im getting the new supercrosse shoulders and arm guard, and yeah, they are big but strangely they dont get in my way so much, i dont know, maybe its the way i shoot/throw, but i like the big shoulder caps, im more of an outside shooter anyway, so i dont need an incredible amount of manuverability.

maybe it is just me, I never used armpads till they changed the rules and required them for hs players. Now I just wear little trace elbow pads and no shoulder pads.
and a question for you older guys, do you think the latest equipment is a big improvement? I recently got new gloves and while I have to admit the supercross felt nice what I really wanted was a pair of L35s. And I have never used an offset head, or anything newer than a Brine MX. how much better are the current heads? I will say that I think monster mesh is a great idea. If only I could string decently

i have an old pair of warrior shoulder pads that have the shoulder cup and arm thing cut off. my elbow pads are a little bigger, but high schoolers tend to hack more in the midwest.
buck.. the "liner" isnt supposed to be worn under the pads.. its just what stx calls their small pad

i know that most people wear it as a stand alone pad but I believe it is suposed to be able to be worn under other shoulderpads,
no actually its not... i know some people at stx, they call it that b/c it was originally built to resemble the football pad liners (spider pads)...

thats all i wear sp liners for football, and size medium arm gaurds to just cover my elbow and forarm.... u dont need anything else

I used to think that way...then a few chipped elbow bones later...I started wearing armpads all the time...and the big size...
after a ruptured spleen I gotta wear rib pads...as you get older and the hits become more harsh...you will need the full shoulder pads (not just the toilet bowls)...and the full armpads...rib pads are still a personal choice but I know many guys that still wear em

gotta love some dmen who wear lite shoulder pads and gloves. i think mll guys do that.

11-25-2003, 10:59 AM
true...Dmen don't really need all that protection...Attack and Mids do because they get hacked...

I wear a lot of gear in box but I get hit a lot so I have to. My shoulder pads are very small and the only injuries I've had are leg and hand. You just don't get hit in the chest or shoulders much unless you turn into it.

in my league its mandatory for us to wear all pads....ribs are optional...
stegmakk
11-25-2003, 02:11 PM
even tho it might seem you never get hit there...i'll not forget a buddy wasn't wearing shoulder pads and broke his collarbone area...somewhere around where the shoulder is...anyway...
with today's equipment pads are alot more comfortable than like 10 years ago...

I can see arguments go both ways...I think its a personal thing...I will wear pads now just because i need to...not all that uncomfortable to me...
but to each their own

a lot of people dont wear a lot of pads. for example: a lot of players where foam shoulder pads. the big bulky stuff is just a gimmick
Paul_Gait_RULZ
11-25-2003, 03:32 PM
sure why not, i take most my hits in the elbow and biceps which is the logical place to hit in box!!!!
i'll get slashed in the shoulders here and there, but i don't hurt and it's not worth limiting your abilities or handicapping yourself w/ pads!!!!!

i would quit in your league CHMIDDIE... or coming to think of it, i'd probably invent my own pads, two shoulder cups on a set of straps, that is it!!!!!
keep in mind we wear huge kidney guards with a high back guard in box lax...some wear rib field pads, but only w/ shoulders!

I guess my problem is that alot of the new stuff seems like useless over priced junk that exists solely to get kids to spend their parent's money on more equipment that does not help them be a better player (I feel the same way about $150 basketball shoes)
anyway stegmakk you are one of the older guys how do you feel about the new equipment? I am still playing with the stuff I was using in HS for the most part.

i thinkit seems to be getting bigger and fancier for nothing and hugely over priced!!!!
eg: all that warrior MLL allstar 5.0 or whatever junk!!!!
debeer visions gloves were sweet, but the rest of the stuff was crap, i admit.... the arm guards cracked and the shoulder were too small and hugely overpriced....
i wear expensive shoes. but they're running shoes. i wear everything, x-factor sp's and avalanche ap's. i wanna get the old gel rib pads. i wrap checked my friend like four times in the upper hip. i think he's gonna buy some now. i don't wear the flappy arm guard that comes off of your shoulder pads. my muscles are so big they don't fit.

i use slash guards. dont call me a fruit either, i just got sick of big *** bruises on each wrist after every practice.
Are those the wrist caps? I've been thinking of those, do they protect well? I always get hit right on the wrists, the gap between my arm pads and gloves. Also, how much do they hinder your motion. But I guess for 5-10 bucks I wouldn't lose too much even if I bought them and they sucked.

thankx, but do they acually have padding in them or are they more like sweat bands?
SullyLax
11-26-2003, 10:17 AM
i got mine from great atlantic. the brine and stx ones are basically the same. yeah, they protect well between your gloves and aps. they have a piece of hard plastic inside em to protect you, so its more than just a sweatband. does keep some sweat out of your gloves tho.
CDLax2
11-26-2003, 10:27 AM
ya they are very protective
WestSideLa X eR
11-26-2003, 10:45 AM
its like a sweatband with a pad of foam or plastic. I bought some cause i have the avalanches, and thiers a huge space between my gloves and ap., so i got some.

11-26-2003, 11:18 AM

I wear a pair of Trace arm pads, I don't know what sport they were intended for but they are basically 6" foam pads if I remember correctly they were about $10
edit - found them

they are the 50000 ELBO-GUARD about 3/4ths of the way down on the page

I'm with this guy. If I was playing a lot of D, I might want a light vest from a set of shoulder pads (hard shot to the chest ain't no fun!), but I don't think you need full shoulder pads for any type of lacrosse......most of the pro box players don't bother with 'em.
