is it just me or do refs never check the defense's sticks? I know at one time i had a vector that was so pinched the ball wouldnt come out of the stick when you held it face down and my pocket was definatly illegal, and not once was i ever checked even when the other team would slam my stick the ball wouldnt fall out. Has anyone seen a d-pole being checked?

we had one of ours checked, just because some wuss on the other team complained that he didn't have an endcap. It was a wet game and it had fallen off, and we got a 2 min unreleasable.
Ah, rules forum! Moved!
And no, I never have.

One of my assistant coaches in middle school asked for a stick check on a D-pole when I had called a timeout for another reason. This player had been carrying up the field all game and never lost the ball when checked. His stick was found illegal and taken from the game. You should have heard his mother yelling at me. She sure was a mother. Of course my asst' coach had disappeared at this point.

No one has ever checked a pole at a game I've been to.

I've never checked one, I've seen it done by Coaches request, that's about it. I don't see myself checking one unless the kid has a couple goals or somthing.

I agree with snakes-eyes. I have seen it done by coached request. I typically choose players that have made a signifcant offensive impact...is some situations that could be a d-pole.

In Federation rules not having and end-cap is not a penalty, I am not sure about NCAA. Livin4lax09, if you were playing federation rules, your stick should have simply been removed from the game until fixed as per Rule 1-7, art. 3

I don't know how many d-poles i have played with and against that I knew for sure had an illegal stick.. sometimes it's so obvious. I'm surprised that in all my years in lacrosse, I have never seen one checked or even questioned.
Sometimes it is easier to keep the ball in a d-pole because of all the leverage they create, but when you cradle through two or three guys checking the hell out of your stick, you should have it checked..
My advise to all.. coaches and players, be suspicious. don't be afraid to request a check.
We officials have enough on our hands with the situations and illegalities that smack us right in the face during a game...why go looking for trouble by measuring a d-pole unless requested by a coach?

Just my point.. I think it should be up to the opposing coach to request a stick check, unless it is so obvious

My partner pulled a LSM stick to check, and it was illegal (he said he picked the stick because the guy was facing off with it and handling the ball a lot, and he'd scored a goal or two). This official had magical powers or something; I think the first 4 games I did with him, 6 or 7 out of 8 sticks he checked were illegal.
I know someone else who pulled a defensive stick, and then they spaced on the dimensions and accidentally called a legal stick too long. Yikes!
In general, we don't pull D-sticks because we're supposed to be picking guys who are scoring or handling the ball a lot. However, if I noticed a longpole that seemed to be defying gravity, I'd certainly check it if I got a chance.

Next time let the other team get a few shots to your gut with the butt-end of a stick with no end-cap, and let us know if you still think the kid is a "wuss"!
Several things in your story don't check out: a missing plug is not a penalty, and you get either 1:00 NR or 3:00 NR for an illegal stick, not 2:00 NR.

today my d pole was checked its an unpinched edge i duno what the ref was thinking. he was also the same ref who let a kid play without an endcap and the kit gave a kid on my team 16 stiches. stupid *** ref.

Never seen it happen...I just need to remember to check my pocket...it might be a little too low...I carry alot with my pole, so I'll check before tourneys...but for regular 30+ and post college lax...unless the stick is super illegal no one cares or checks...

Coincidentally, I checked a D-pole this weekend for the very first time. Lots going on at the time....two flags down that had to be enforced at the end of the period, a previous call to be explained to a coach (goalie briefly caught the ball with his hand then dropped it), just lots happening then I still had to check a stick. By the time I got to the stick check we should have been getting ready for the next quarter. The closest player to me was a D-pole who happened to be walking by and the rest of the team was about 20-25 yards away. So I grabbed it, it was fine and we moved on.
