I agree 100%... I would have played guys lax if given the chance. The statements about defensive fouls being largely up to the descretion of the refs is true to a point of utter frustration. Girls lacrosse becoming mens lacrosse is inevitable unless the powers that be keep trying to hold the talent and technology back. (hey, one thing's for sure when it happens: at least then our equipment won't smell as rank as how most boys infamously are know to keep theirs)
Give me padding, a helmet and let me really check. I don't know about you, but just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I can't hit as hard/ take hits like a guy. I hate watching anything other than high level college women's lax games, because anything lower than that is just painful to watch (not as painful as field hockey however). Give us a choice!

let's keep the other sport bashing on the minimum. I love field hockey and always will. that doesn't mean I can't still love lax. If you want to talk about a rough game, come talk to me about getting a drive to the knee cap from less than 5 yards away with a field hockey ball. When you've expierienced that, the figer smashing (there is this in lax but not anywhere near fh), and the all around roughness, then we can talk. but until then, please try to be even minorly kind. there was really no reason for you to put that in your message. and oh ya, one more thing, who says we can't play both lax and FH? the best players ever to come through my school played both and they were die hard lax girls.

this was a pretty interesting article, it might be worth linking from general lacrosse so it gets more disscussion, for example how guys would feel about playing with girls.

sadly enough, i think the article has a point... guys lax is a lot more fun to watch because the game actually moves! one of the reasons i went out for goalie was becuase it is the most physical of the positions... meaning i get to go out and take a beating (masochistic, i know, but so is guy's lax).
i think there are a few simple changes that can be made to girls lax w/o making it into guys lacrosse, though. One of the things would be eliminating free-position shots like the guy talks about in the article... another thing would be creating actual out-of-bounds (again, straight out of the article)... dont know if that'll happen though. I can dream, cant i?

I know of two girls from my province who play with the guys. last year none of the guys would hit her, then in the middle of a game she smoked the biggest guy on the other team. from then on nobody cared if she was a girl, she was playing with us so she gets hit like the rest of us.
Although I only read the first half of it, one thing I agree with, but not the only thing, is why not give them a choice, I think that here in Calgary they don't have the choice. .... sad ain't it?
I know that in box though, the girls have thier own leauge with the same rules.

Hmm...
Well first off. The article was great. I applaud the writer.
Secondly, wow...
I agree at times I have wanted to play the men's game. Especially when watching the U-19 men and women play and realising I had more fun watching the men play. I love women's lacrosse like no other. It is almost my life. I would not trade the experiences I have had in lacrosse for anything. I do agree however, with the article, and with liongirlylax that some of the rules could be changed to make women's lacrosse a more enjoyable spectator sport and less frustrating player sport.
At the same time I am hesitant to say these things because I love women's lacrosse for what it is: purely a finesse, skill, and elegant game. Yes you do see the "girl running down the field like a track star" issue happening. Heck, I admit we had one girl just like that on our team last year, but that takes away from the fact that there is good women's lacrosse out there. The writer mentioned enjoying high level D1 lacrosse. In those instances you will see defenders who know how to draw that girl away from the goal and call for help. You'll see give and go passes and shots from behind. You'll see girls with heads bleeding from proper (yes proper, she drove into goal really hard! i did not get called for it either.) defensive posistioning.
I like to think that the rules committe and women's lacrosse world at large can learn to mesh together the two worlds of lacrosse without conflicting with the spirit of the women's game.

I must say, I have never and I dont think I will ever want to play mens lacrosse. It is a very entertaining game to watch, but I love womens lacrosse and the rules that it has. I play DI lax and it is the best thing ever.
Let's think about it this way though...women could never handle the way that men play. Womens bodies were not made for the physical aspect of the game. Girls are not strong enough, and they cant take the hits like guys can. It's like womens ice hockey. It's basically the same game, but different rules had to be made because womens bodies can't take the hits. You simplay could not have women playing a game that is bruttle like that.
Let's think about what the purpose of lacrosse was. It was a game invented to get MEN ready to go to war. It wasn't invented for women anyway. Things have to be adapted for women. It's not to say that women can not handle it, or putting women down in anyway...our bodies werent built for that. I can tell you from two years of doing mens lifting programs and what it has done for me and the girls on my team. It has hurt us more than helped us because the way we are anatomically, we can't handle it.
Mens lacrosse is a great sport, and so is womens. They are two different games and they are fun to watch for many different reasons. If you ever made womens lacrosse more like mens, or mens more like womens, neither would be fun to watch anymore. Maybe it is because we are all used to seeing them the way they are now, but it would be very strange. Not to mention the fact that if womens lax was like mens it would really be nothing like it.
I can honestly say that I do enjoy going out and watching young girls play lacrosse. No it is not at the skill level of a top high school or DI college, but I find it enjoyable (I have coached rec players for five years now).
All of these issues are purely opinion, but I know that me and a bunch of other friends on lots of other teams that I have talked to say that they love the way the game is now, and if itchanges much more they dont know if they would really want to play anymore. (There is a senior on my team and she says that she is really glad that she is graduating because they have changed the game too much and she doesnt find it all that fun to play it anymore)
In short...i love the womens game the way it is and the way it has always been played. It is a game of skill, finese, and speed and there is nothing like it. I would never change a thing about it, or make it more like the mens game. We dont need it to be like their game...it is our own thing. I will continue to play it and love it until it is changed too much then it is time to hang up the stick!

I agree with the article. Since i have played both boys and girls i know that they just let the boys play and be rough and whistles are hardly ever blown but in girls u cant do anything without the game being stopped. However both are fun and i dont think any guy would have an easy time switching to a girls stick, but i think the author is wrong to say those things about girls lacrosse and never had played it. Its like me saying broccoli is gross and never have tryed it.

some of the bigger guys I know wouldnt want to hit a girl. A friend of mine that graduated last year knocked 11 kids out in one season. Out cold (many of which led to fights). I know that he would never do that to a girl, which creates a disadvantage. I know girls like to think that they can hit like the boys (no offence). But when you have a guy running at you that you know can easily put you out for the season, you may begin to think otherwise

JustLaxin, thanks for the back-up.
Suffice to say we all have different opinions on this subject and that they are based on our personal experiences. I've played games/seen games where the whistle is blown little and natural play is allowed to go on Lancer, so I think that it is too hard headed of us to think of convincing someone else who has had a totally different playing experience than us that we have a better opinion on this subject.
To each her (or his) own.

i consider womens lax a completely different sport. i mean if i tried to play womens lacrosse i would'nt even be able to compete, simply couldnt keep the ball in my stick and i would hit to much. likewise if a girl played mens lax they wouldn't get out played(like stick skill wise) but they would probably get out hustled.

girls lax games wold become much more intense. there would be more hustle for the ball b/c u knew that u wouldnt be called for hitting someone
i think girls lax could do with some sprucing up, rule revisions etc. i came from playing 11 years of soccer to my first season of girls lax and was suprised at how much more physical girls soccer is and i would love if womens lax could become more intense.

im a guy but... i read the article and
"Thousands of girls are having their athleticism muted by silly, chauvinistic, and outdated rules."
that line is the most truethful thing ive heard since school let out. And think it would be so much better if girls played the same game as guys

I love womens lacrosse, but there is nothing more irritating than stealing the ball, sprinting down the feild, and realizing that play has stopped becase you did an empty stick check.
I would liek to see some of the fussy rules changed-but I woudlnt wanted to put on pads and a helmet and get the crap knocked out of me on attack, (not that it doesnt already happen sometimes anyways).
Our game has so much finess, and the skills take years to perfect. Moreover, one of my aunts, who had never seen a girls lacrosse game before, remarked that "you guys beat the crap out of each other" after watching a high school girls game.

I would DEFINITLEY love for my womens game to have all the same mens rules.
we played hard boundaries in the cup of nations tourney and it was awesome
one thing i HAVE to diagree upon though: the article said that it is often a tactic on clears to throw it out of bounds and get it back. NO ITS NOT. that is incredibly wrong. this article was obviously written by some one not informed properly or having enough experience in the womens game
As a coach most of my girls would rather play the mens game. That being said a few things could change that would make the womens game better
1, Call more contact against the attack and not always against the Defense. There is charging I saw it called only twice this year.
2, Get stop calling the foul if the shot hits the goalie they are wearing the same padding as a guy.
3, Let the goalie come out and not be called for shooting space. They are padded.
4, End the frezzing on a whistle. Let the game flow.
5, End the empty check
6, End the having to retract on the check. There are so many different calls on this one hard checks even with a retract some times are called orther time it is not called.
7, Go to hard boundries.
8, Let the goal stand instead of having it called back because of shooting space.
Any one else have others?

i couldnt agree more :)
ques--seriosuly attackers ALWAYS charge but somehow its ALWAYS "on the body" ont he defense
i wouldnt nessesarily change any rules. but make the refs less strict. like allow us to touch eachother a little without it being a foul. and like not calling shooting space when the attacker is past the 12 and ur on the 8. etc. refs are lameee
i wouldnt want to play the guys game. but i want to be allowed to play our game. i also think that girls should be able to set up like leagues where they played by the guys rules since so many people like them. but i definately prefer the finess, and speed (not power and brute like the guys...)
oh yeah, and when they were saying that they would make the girls rules into the guys. i dont think they meant he girls would play with the guys. the only reason girls play with guys now is b/c there arent girls teams available. iof they did make the rules the same they wouild prob separate guys and girls ( like soccer, basketball, etc)

i agree with everything in this article...girls rules are pretty crazy and I think playing boys lacrosse would be the greatest thing ever. I just have one thing to disagree about. in the article they mentioned "but how often can you say a 7th grade girls' game is 'well played'? Certainly not as often as you can for a 7th grade boys' game" i just think that was sorta narrow mined.

actually under Title IX if a woman wants to play a guy's sport she has to be allowed and vice versa, if u do it though u better hope u know what you're doing, when I was in high school we played against a team that had a girl playing guy's lax and our defense guys would take full advantage of her smallness and severely clobber her any chance they had.

it is an interesting article. but i love the way girls lacrosse is played. if given the chance maybe i would have played guys lax but i would much rather play girls. prob bcuz that is just what i am used to.
p.s. i really hope that prediction doesn't come true.

I agree with Greener, I think we should have the choice. I mean, I'm so sick and tired of being told that girls lacrosse is just a girly version of real lacrosse. Maybe not as much for our team because we were trained like a guy.... so we're really butch..... but if I had the choice I wish I could play both. I personally think guys would be a different game, but still fun! Some of the tiny girls who would get the crap beaten out of them may not agree, so they can stick to women's how it is now. Personally, I think guys lacrosse would be awesome to play. I wish we had the option, but "co-ed" lacrosse is a bunch of bull. When I told the guys coach at my school that I was gonna try out for the co-ed team.... then came the girls team, cuz he knew I would train until I made JV, no matter what it took. I guess it's good because now we have a girls team, but I kinda wish I could have played the guys version. IDK.
BOTTOM LINE: THE NO BOUNDRIES THING IS A LOAD OF BULL AND SHOULD BE THE FIRST RULE TO GO. HONESTLY.... IT'S STUPID.
