I am a slow attackan. I have excelent stick skills, if I do say so myself, but I usually play X. Whenever I get the ball and the D-man harrases me with checks, I really dont have the option to "run away". I usually end up taking a few steps than forcing a bad pass. Can any attackmen give me tips on what I should do in these situations. Or any D-men tell me things that slower attackmen have done to them in a situation like this one... Thanks.

I'm a slow attackman too so I if I know the d is going to come at me with his stick, not his body, I'll bait him for a big take-away check to put him off ballance or just enough out of position so I can ,ake a better pass etc..

Get faster bud. There's no reason you can't build up a decent amount of speed to keep the guy off you. If your slow at X dmen like me will be all over you and your life will be miserable.
Are you overweight or just not that athletic?

Try running on a daily basis, but start out slow. Always run for at least 20 minutes. Push yourself! You want to be a good, fast attackmen? Run and don't quit!
While working towards that just try to get the D to overcommit themselves. Try throwing some good Rocker fakes. The one where you have your back on the defenseman, and pretend like you are going to roll to one side then stop and roll to the other. Just Remember this:
Dodges are to get space from you and the D boy, not to blow past them.

no speed necessary,, create some space.. pull your defender out.. don't back him in.. pull him out near the restraining lines or end lines and try to catch him overextending himself.. if you do get a step on him, the sliding d men have to come from a longer distance, by then you can dump the ball over them to a cutting crease man or wing man.
Don't hang your stick if you do get a step on him.

Don't jog or run . . . commit yourself to doing wind-sprints and running the stairs (go up over ever-other-step) on a daily basis. I would recommend a visit the family Chiropractor and have your hips adjusted. You sound very much like a player I had; slow but possessed excellent stick-skills and he too played X. After he had visited the chiropractor in te off-season I immediately notice that he gained some speed; not a lot but any improvement is better than. I also subsribe to what some else had mentioned and that is become a master of dodges! I see too many D-men over commit.

I don't see how going to a chiropractor will make someone faster. Could you elaborate please.

i could be that when he runs his bak hurts so he got that fixed and he could run faster w/ out the pain
when i run for a while i get back spasums
for the speed just work our your legs. i did that and i am one of the fastest on my team even though i cant run for an extended period of time

Im 10 pounds overweight, but I am athletic. Im slow and these pains in my ankles make me slower.

yep i am a pretty slow attackman also.....i just put my stick in one hand and just cradle until someone is open or there is a hole
solution 1: Dont play X any more, play on the side so you have the option to shoot from a distance or make better passes.
solution 2 :Where ever teh Dman comes from EG left side of cage, run around to the rightside you will have a bit of a edge and tehn if and when the slide comes you can dish and get a nice assist.....

Playing middie at practices and stuff is a good idea. I played attack last year but played middie at some practices and camps and it helps a lot.

Im slow but thats only b/c i have an injury, but i also out weigh most D men so i just let them beat on me.. im kinda built as a punching bag.. you can beat the crap out of me but i wont drop the ball, so i can either push the D man outa my way or get the seperation for a pass.. you just have to work on getting speration, might i recomend V-cuts.. they work wonders..

Im a slow attackman but am leading scorer for my highschool team...a lot of playing at x for me is having the power to run by him and take the hit that you're gonna get and keep going to the cage... other then that, i had to work on my dodges a lot this year to become starting attackman at x...but after you work on dodges you will get 10x better at getting your defensemen off balance, and you end up with an open shot, or pass to the crease...
I usually isolate from x and fake inside do a roll dodge and swing out for the wide open shot...also ask ur coach for some agility drills...if you are more agile and can cut quicker then your d man will be on his back and you'll be shooting the jump shot rite in the goalies face

on my team we have this really fat kid who is slow but really good stick work, what he does is either work himself to side right,or side left thwn he backs him down like in b-ball and then spins and hes got an open shot on the net. Believe i no it works im standing in the net everyday watching this

it would be smart to work on baiting the defenders with dodges and such, but if you really want to excel at the attack position, you need to work on speed. Right now it may be your weak point, but with some hard work and putting in some serious training, you can become faster.

I am an attackmen also...I wouldn't say I'm slow but not as fast as some people. When I play X and a defender is running at me just do a quick face dodge or something...works in my league, hee hee.

Im not sure if anyone has said it cuz i only skimmed but about the forcing a pass...learn to pass with both left and right and you should have a better look to shoot or pass...
Also throw some dodges in there..im a horribly slow attackman but i have a really good roll dodge...so find something that your good at, and take advantage of it...Or learn to be a great outside shooter....

you can't just become faster you are pretty much born with a set speed you get strong as you get older therefore faster.. you can change things like fitness and technique(yes running technique) which could make you a little bit faster... but you are pretty much born with it

if you're big, then just body up on ur D and take him for a run around the goal where you can dish or shoot. if you're small, then get faster, because you've got no size to rely on.

on solution 1, that is really me. I have beenn told by many coaches and even college players(peter laseur and sean lindsay to name some) that i have the stick skills of a good varsity player wheni was in 7th grade. i also happen to have quite a good shot but im not fast enough to burn people, so what i did was work on my shot, and now in 8th grade i can take any shhot like sidearm, sub or over the top without sny hesitation. like today in practoice iwas winding up for a sidearm and a dman came up to me and i wasnt gonna hit him in the stomach so i pulled ot down for a sub quickly and still scored from way far out :worship: :worship: :worship:

Well, you could do what I could end up doing. Snipe. Just sit back and work on shooting from long distances. I'm slow, but if I end up playing attack, this is what I'll probably try to do in addition to slashing in front of the net.

Work on your stick skills, dodges, and strength train. Get stronger so you can take those checks, and improve your stick skills to where you can shoot no matter is a d pole is on you, and work on dodges or rolls. You can use you out play him mentally too, get him to over commit or lunge and roll and bolt pass him for a on the crease shot. No having speed wont kill you, but having it is certainly a advantage. I know I am a d pole.

Not to be a d-bag or anything but wtf are you talking about?
Building speed is all about how hard you work. if there was a set limit to how fast a person can go then I must have been blessed with a miracle, buddy.
All you have to do is work hard. Work out your legs hard, consistently, and often. This builds your off the line speed and your change of direction, i.e. your explosiveness off of directions change (roll dodges, etc.) which can be critical in beating a d-pole. Run alot of sprinting drills, resistance running, and distance. This also builds your acceleration, top speed, and endurance because you are [hopefully] pushing your body to its limit during these exercises. Which in turn strengthens those aspects after recovery from the workout. No pain no gain definetly applies here, it really boils down to your will power and how bad you want to reach your goals. Finding a nice long 2 - 3 mile route to run every day is good because it provides change of degrees of inclination, varying turns, and lots of body/wind resistance. Run it at least every other day. As usual eat very healthy, no soda or any bullsh*t, lots of sleep, stretch before and after, etc.
Theres is alot more to building speed and agility than in this post but this should be a good kick start for people who want to know more.
PM me if you want the sprinting drills or workouts I did for my training, or if you live around st. louis a personal trainer I highly reccomend
peace out
