From the time that a Federation equipment check starts and until it is finished (barring any non-equipment-related USC fouls, etc.)there are 8 time possibilities. Please remember that we penalize the MOST SEVERE infraction if there are multiple infractions.

1. No penalty. Remove and fix: non school-issued helmet decal, no ball stop/end cap. illegal shoes. duplicate jersey #
2. Technical foul: color problem with sweats/compression shorts, helmet color (not stated in rules but assessed as technical in my area).
3. 1:00 NR player adjusts stick but all equipment is legal. No shoulder/arm/mouthpiece/shoes(!). Jewelry
4. 1:00 NR and 30 sec. R: player adjusts stick AND #2 above.
5. 2:00 NR: player adjusts stick and deep pocket, or no shoulder/arm/mouthpiece. Jewelry.
6. 3:00 NR stick is illegal (not pocket)
7. 4:00 NR player adjusts stick and stick is illegal (not pocket).
8. 6:00 NR PLayer adjusts stick and this is his second USC penalty of the game and stick is illegal (not deep pocket)

I did not do goalie equipment. I am unsure where to put non-Nocsae helmet, illegal face bar. Rulebook is no help here...I'd guess I'd go with technical foul.

I am pretty sure you are wrong on this one. NFHS Maximum Penalty would be 4:00. 1 minute NR Personal with a 3 minute Illegal Equipment. Even if Illegal Pocket, Illegal Length, Pinched Head, No Shoulderpads, Cut Gloves, it would still add up to 3 minute NR. I await LaxRef's Reply.

Your math is good but I want to throw in my support for the 4-min NR maximum penalty time. Only source I can cite is MDOC Training manual page 66 which states "...adjusted crosse prior to presentation .... plus illegal crosse...Total penalty time not to exced 4-min NR." I agree that this does not account for the NFHS 2nd USC elevating to 3-min NR but I support the 4-min ceiling as most severe penalty we should award.

You know, people say this all the time, and every time they say it I ask them to show me where in the rules it says you can't get a minute each for gloves, mouthpiece (NFHS), sholder pads, armpads, and helmet. No one can ever show me.

Now, it may well be an unwritten rule, but I never liked those. And while I'd be inclined to not rock the boat and give a minute for each violation above, I think I might give a guy 3:00 + 1:00 for, say, an altered crosse and no shoulder pads, plus another 1:00 if he adjusted the crosse.

What the rules DO make clear is that if you have a deep pocket and a short crosse, you penalize the 3:00 but not the 1:00. Whether the "max 1:00 for all other equipment violations" is simply an (unjustified) inference from this rule, I can't say.

I've added this to my list of rules comments to send in this year.

How about Federation page 61. 1-9-1 Situation A: B1 is not wearing shoulder pads, arm pads, or mouthpiece. RULING: One-minute NR personal foul.

How about Federation page 61. 1-9-1 Situation A: B1 is not wearing shoulder pads, arm pads, or mouthpiece. RULING: One-minute NR personal foul.

Hmmm. I guess when I read that, I parse it as "He's not wearing shoulder pads OR he's not wearning a mouthpiece OR he's not wearing arm pads" instead of "He's not wearing shoulder pads AND he's not wearning a mouthpiece AND he's not wearing arm pads."

This is in the same way I'd read "B1 slashes or trips A1. RULING: One- to three-minute personal foul." I wouldn't think they were saying he'd slashed him AND tripped him.

I will admit it is open to interpretation, but I really don't think they were intending to imply that B1 was missing ALL of that equipment. If they had been, they should have made a bigger deal out of it--and made it clearer--by saying something like "One-minute NR personal foul to cover all three violations."

LaxRef, I would agree the sentence should have been written more clearly.
But it's present ambiguous wording gives me, in a backdoor manuever, the "proof" for the common accepted practice of only penalizing the most severe equipment illegality during an equipment check. Please add this sentence to your "Reword Better" pile for the Federation's next rules meeting in June.
