Team A has the ball, and A1 shoots. A2 and goalie B1 chase the shot. I very loudly and clearly award the ball to team B (white) by yelling "White ball!" and pointing. No one makes an immediate move to pick up the ball, so I yell "Pick it up, white!" and start a 5-count. B1 picks up the ball, steps 1 yard in from the endline, and pauses. A2 is about 6 yards away, so I blow the whistle to start play. The goalie nonchalantly tosses the ball to A2, who is shocked, but he keeps it together and runs to the front of the goal, shoots and scores while B1 stands there dumbfounded.
I played this over in my mind about 10 times, and I can't think of anything that could have given me an indication that the goalie was confused, so I think it's all on him. I think it was the strangest play I've ever seen.
