View Full Version : Releasable penalty time and goals

There is an NFHS case (7-2.d) where a player is serving a 1-minute NR and a 30-second technical foul. His team lets in a goal during the 1 minute NR portion f the penalty time. The RULING states: B1 must serve the full one-minute of NR time. The penalty is releasable for the final 30 seconds.

It SEEMS (to my reading) to state that as soon as the 60 NR seconds are up, B1 is able to reenter. I *THOUGHT* that a goal during the NR time is NOT carried over, and B1 can only be released from the releasable portion of the penalty is if the goal is scored during the 30 seconds he is serving for that technical foul. That is, a goal from 1-60 seconds does NOT affect the final 30 seconds of releasable penalty time. Only a goal from 61-90 seconds causes early release.

Which is it? Does a goal scored during the NR time wipe out the releasable time? Or must it be scored during the releasable portion of the penalty time to be released? :imparied:

Its piss poor wording and at best what I can get out of it is that they are trying to say is that NR time does not convert releasable time into NR, since they say it is releasable not does not say released that it is not released.

I can't find any wording to support either argument in Fed Rule book. If I were working the game, I'd agree with you. Goal 1-60 sec no bearing on player being released. Goal from 61-90 sec, player released.

The way I read it is the last 30 seconds of the 90 seconds served are releasable. But the player is only release if a goal is scored in the releaseable time, ie last 30 seconds. So I would agree with your initial *thought* as well as tjs's assessment.

There's an AR in there somewhere and if I had my book...
no release on that first 60 seconds. Then clock starts on the 30 seconds
and can be released during this time. Theycan score 8 goals in that first 60 seconds...has no bearing on that final 30 seconds.

Then we agree. The goal during the 60 seconds does not count towards the 30 second releasable penalty.

That is correct, I agree with you.
