Yea I'll tell you right now I didn't search for this so I apologize in advance if this is already a topic.
In my game today I was given a 1- minute non releasable for wearing elbow pads instead of arm guards. I've worn defensive elbow pads for about 4 years now and have never been called for this, after all I play defense. The refs just love screwing are team over and this guy was being a jerk. So was this legit?

We've had refs like that too, but whatever. To answer your question they should be legal. If they aren't I don't know why.
BTW, you might want to ask this in the officiating forum.
That's ridiculous for two reasons:
A. Doesn't matter, as long as they cover the elbow, pretty much.
B. There's no rule that says that you have to wear elbow pads in NFHS. Look it up. Not there. I'm a ref myself, and thought you did, but we looked it up and found out that you didn't.

There is a rule about arm pads. It is non-specific so I don't know why you gaot a penalty. The rule is 1-9-H and reads arm pads (optional for goalie)

Raine,
You may have overlooked this but they ARE required. Page 15, Rule 1-9.1.h: Arm pads (optional for GK)
So, they are required, As to what constitutes arm pads is open to interpretation. I would think elbow ads are sufficient, however for a ref who is concerned about safety, just covering your elbows may not be adequate. Plus, I would think you would want true arm guards given the nature of the d-pole slashing the heck out of your arms. If you are going to cover your elbows, there is no additional loss of mobility in wearing regular arm guards.
If the ref deemed your elbow pads did not cover enough of your arm, then a 1 minute NR penalty is called for according to the Illegal Equipment rule under personal fouls.

Elbow pads cover the elbows. Arm pads cover the arm, not just the elbows.
Is a 1:00 NR foul appropriate? Well, maybe, but a better way to handle it is to catch it before the game and have the player switch them, or to send the guy off and tell him to switch them instead of penalizing. If he comes back on the field with the elbow pads, penalize.

Wait, so elbow pads are illegal? Or are they ok? Because I don't really get slashed since I play defense and I've worn elbow pads my entire life. I mean they are lacrosse elbow pads. I understand that you get a 1:00 NR for illegal equipment but still I asked when I bought them and was told they would be fine.
