I just started playing and i started playing attack...the other day our coach needed someone to play defense for the game...i offered to do so..however because i dont have a long pole i just used my short stick...i really enjoyed it....ive tried to play D before using a long pole and fould the long pole to be unweildy....i liked playing D with my short stick and did a whole lot better....i was wondering if its something that goes on for a defenseman to use a short stick...is that even allowed...and is it recomended...your advice would be great...thanks

It's perfectly legal to play Short Stick D (which is also what it's called).
Not really recommended because it's better to have three longpoles rather than 2 and a shorty. If you like it and are good, stick (no pun intented) with it.

It's allowed, but definitely not reccomended. When you start playing higher levels, and the attackmen and middies get quicker you'll need a long pole to keep your distance from them, so that they don't just split dodge you with ease. Long Pole is better for poke checks and the coverage you get has a much bigger radius than a short stick.
If you want to play D with a short stick, then start playing middie, you'll see plenty of offense and plenty of defense.
I don't know how old you are right now, but when you get into high school varsity, I'd be willing to bet that only one out of a thousand coaches in the country would even think about letting you use a short stick on D. If you want to play college lacrosse as a defender, then you better pick up the long pole right away.
