I've never heard of this rule, but our team was called several times for it. What happened is a player was legelly body checked, fell on the ground, then scooped the ball while on his knees. The ref awarded the other team the ball.

perhaps the player fell on the ball and withheld the ball from play?

No, and after the game our coach told us that there was no rule involving playing on the ground. When he called the penalty the ref said "You can't play the ball from your knees"

I have heard many coaches this year yell "he's playing on the ground," i just kind of look over at them with the "so what" look. Is there a big misconception about it or what?

I know that playing from the ground is a penalty in soccer, so maybe year-round refs are confusing the two sports. Also there were two refs, and older guy and a younger guy. The older guy was always correcting the younger guy when he made mistakes, and it was the younger guy who was calling the "Playing from the ground foul" Maybe the older guy just didn't catch his mistake, or wasn't clear on the rule, so decided to let it stand.

The ref was wrong. You can pass, shoot, scoop stick check, kich etc while on the ground. The only prohibition is that a player with any part of his body on the ground other than his feet cannot be bodychecked by an opponent. He may be stick checked, but not body checked.

Soccer crossover rule! Gotta be it. Nothing wrong with doing that in lacrosse but your UR and IB radar needs to be turned up REAL high, cause a kid playing it from that position is gonna present an attractive target. i would think that a legal stick check to dislodge the ball would allow play to continue, though...

I know its illegal to check a player while they are on the ground. I.E. you cant body check them while theyre getting up or check their stick while they are kneeling down.
