The Arizona Sting defeated the Colorado Mammoth, 16-13, at Glendale Arena on Friday night to open the 2005 Champion's Cup Playoffs. The victory was the first postseason win in Arizona's franchise history. The Sting will meet the Calgary Roughnecks next Saturday for the right to play in the 2005 Champion's Cup Final. Tonight's game marks the end of the career of Gary Gait, who scored one goal and added four assists.

The Sting had an early 2-1 lead, but Colorado scored four straight goals and finished the first quarter with a 7-3 lead. Arizona played brilliant defense from the second quarter on, holding the Mammoth to only six goals in the final 45 minutes as they chipped away at the lead. Arizona took the lead as Dan Dawson scored to cap an Arizona three-goal run that started the second half.

With Colorado trailing 13-11 late in the fourth quarter, Brian Langtry scored two straight goals to tie the game. However, Arizona answered back, scoring the final three goals of the game, as Dawson scored a pair, and Craig Conn delivered the final blow.

Craig Conn (5g, 3a) and Dawson (4g, 2a) led the Arizona offense, while Lindsay Plunkett (3g, 5a), Pat Maddalena (2g, 6a) and Cory Bomberry (2g, 1a) also scored. Mike Miron recorded 30 saves in the win.

Brian Langtry (5g, 1a) and Brad Self (3g) led Colorado, while five other players scored one goal apiece as the Mammoth used a balanced attack. Gee Nash recorded 37 saves in the loss.

Arizona will meet the Calgary Roughnecks next Saturday in the Semi-Finals at Pengrowth Saddledome. Faceoff is slated for 8:00 PM Mountain Time.

Gee unit...Try longer than that. Since the 1987 season, when the Baltimore Thunder won it all, this franchise has been utterly cursed. NOTHING they've done has worked. They constantly lose to lesser teams.

This is why I say that the Anaheim Storm will win a championship before the Mammoth win another.

Anaheim won't win a championship before Colorado because they wont be in Anaheim next year. But as for the losing, I think the team is too old to last the entire season.
