I am interested in getting Box Lacrosse up and going in Scotland because it seems to be growing in the rest of Europe. I want to send a team to a tournament in the autumn in Holland but have no experience of box. I know there are some differences in equipment so i was wondering is anyone could advise me about where to get my hands on some cheap box equipment, and if anyone can give me a bit more info about the game, what if anything to train differently for box as opposed to field.

......I know there are some differences in equipment so i was wondering is anyone could advise me about where to get my hands on some cheap box equipment, and if anyone can give me a bit more info about the game, what if anything to train differently for box as opposed to field.

Equipment:

-Helmet and gloves are the same, although many box players just use hockey helmets with lacrosse facecages because they're lighter and cheaper than lacrosse helmets.

-Stick rules are a lot more flexible (tighter heads, deeper pockets allowed)

-if it's real box lacrosse (i.e. fully legalized cross checking, liberal interpretation of slashing rules) you need kidney pads rather than rib pads, full arm guards, and bicep pads. Shoulder pads are less critical, but if you're more comfortable wearing them, you can use the same ones

Kidney pads, box arm guards and bicep pads are cheap. Maybe $40/$30/$25 respectively. Try probosslacrosse.com. If you're looking to outfit a whole team, they might be willing to cut you a nice deal.

Training:
-Find a suitable floor and some play diagrams and work on that stuff. Otherwise, physical conditioning and basic skills are similar. Endurance requirements are a little different. You will be on the floor for shorter periods, but running harder and faster while you are on the floor. 1 to 2 minute shifts are the norm, there's no "down time" while the ball's at the other end like in field.....if your team has the ball, 5 men are on offense. If the opponents have the ball, 5 men are on defense.

You need to learn how to cross check effectively on defense, and pick and roll on offense. Ontario Lacrosse Association (ontariolacrosse.com) has coaching material available.

Thanks, I have a fair idea of the pace of the game from watching box videos. I am guessing the goalie kit is more expensive that that for field though

Yes, yes it is. It is similar to buying goaling equipement for Ice Hockey, maybe marginally less expensive. You would be looking at around 500 Quid for decent stuff.

I am sure though if you shop around you will be able to find some stuff for much cheaper, or if you go on Ebay they might have some stuff as well.

Cheers

Real Box Lacrosse is hard to find in Europe.

During Winter some turnaments are played in gyms. Game is tougher then field but no cross-checking ...

The Czechs have got the box game pretty downpat. They host a tournament every year with teams from all over Europe as well as a few American and Canadian team.
