[Goalies] Critique (MClothier Rocks!)

After checking out MClothier's amazing pockets and a little advice from him I stung up my Eclipse with an amazing pocket. It looks kinda sloppy right now and I'm going to clean it up a bit later.

agreed. except in the second picture, there's more than enough space for the ball to roll out of the back of the pocket.

Hmm the sidewalls look funny. I think it's because you skipped a few more holes than I am used to seeing. I think it makes the pocket a little messed up (if you look more towards the throat, it kind of look a little weird, that 1/3 of the pocket). Other than that, looks pretty good. Oh I would put a lighter to those shooting string though. They look like they are going to fray even more.

that looks intresting since u skipped holes in the mesh. does it have any whip. how does it handle?

It's pretty nuts, this thing has virtually no whip (for being a goalie head), by skipping holes and strining the sidewalls directly to the head it eliminates almost all the whip. Sure it looks kind of weird but It makes a deep pocket with no whip, I can't ask for much more.

I'm still playing around with how many holes I'd like to skip, I think 2 is the perfect number.

if its new mesh, it might have no whip now but i bet once you take some hard shots(quite a few), it will need to be messed with

for the sidewall string- go through each diamond, but only go through a sidewall hole every 2-3, sometimes 4 diamonds in the middle and bottom of the head make sure the sidewalls gradually go through more diamonds- like 1d at the top, then slowly get to 2d, then in the middle or where u want ur pocket to be, start skipping liek 3-4

Hmm, it is good to see someone else finally attempting some of MC's pockets on this forum. So many people talk of how insane they are I think we are due to see pockets like these from others.

it looks deeper... but you should still go through every hole, just dont connect them all to the sidewall. if you skip one or two, weave the string through it so it doesnt bunch up as much like how it is now.

Why would you want a pocket that big throughout the entire stick. It is so big that the ball will roll around quite a bit giving you less hold. I don't think you should skip so many diamonds near the top if any. But hey, if you like it, all the power to ya.

Well after playing around with it (I don't know if it's specifically because of the size of the pocket) it does sacrafice hold, but the accuracy and lack of whip makes it worth it. I've had normal heads that don't shoot/pass as fast and as cleanly as this pocket.

I'm still trying to find a way to reduce the bunching more while keeping the pocket shape and trying to increase hold. An idea I had was to include vertical railings on the head to hold the ball better, and possibly make the stick even more accurate. Of course being as clean of a throwing stick as it is it might just add more whip.

I don't know, I'll play around with it some more and post back with results/new pictures.

andyb and anyone else who wants to kno- when stringing the sidewalls, start going through every hole near the top of the headlike 1d per the first or first two sidewall holes, then as u gradually get to the middle of theh ead, then skip like every other 2-3d (like- skip every 2d, then skip every 2/3d, then every3d...) at the bottom, gradually start skipping like every2d then at the last hole, go through the next diamond-
my nemesis is strung: (number in parentheses is the sidewall hole number counting fro mthe first actually sidewall hole at the top, not includign the long slit above it)
start at the 4th sidewall string from the top(attatch mesh to sidewall)(4)
go through the next diamond, then go through sidewall(5)
attatch mesh to sidewall 3 diamonds down (remeber to always go through the each diamond, but attach wutever the diamond count is...)(6)
the every3rd diamond liek above(7)
then every 4d(9; skip the middle hole whic hwould be the 8th one)
back to every 3rd(10)
every 3rd(11)
every 3rd(12)
then finish the sideall at the outer bottom string holes- use the inner holes for the bottom string itself

o yea start the topstring on the 3rd sidewall HOLE ritew above where i said to tstart the sidewalls in hole 4, that way u will have evenly stretched the mesh alogn the top- this adds to the formation of a nice arc/ channel for theb all to come out

I might just order another Eclipse or a new Guardian and string it up a little differently, I'm becoming very fond of how my stick throws.

Or do you think I can make the same pocket on a Goalmaster? Since I have one lying around, it kind of seems like monster mesh would be better suited for that.

um instead of another eclipse or guardian try a nemesis i have 2 and i have found that i can string better pockets on them (probably just a coincidence tho). also i have tried 20d on a goalmaster, and i have found it to turn out very whippy no matter how shallow i strung it bc the golamaster's design is wide up to allowing the mesh to create a shelf like pocket

i cant get closer pics bc that pocket is old- i have strung up a new 12d in its place- and the same pocket can be done i suppose, but the pockt depth will not be as deep as it would be with 20d (20d- 2.5-3.5 balls deep/ hard mesh- 1.5-2.75 balls deep) and i will be making a tutorial on 20d and 12d sometime this coming weekend when school is finally over so be patient
