I watched the NCAA games this weekend and was a bit confused. I saw the face off guys leaning their sticks in. :banghead: I got so many e-mails regarding this throughout the season. I thought for sure at that level the officails wouldn't allow that to occur. Any thoughts?

At that level it is more important for the FO to be fair than to be legal. Perhaps both sticks were leaning in...that is hard to pick up on tv camera.

My impression is that the higher-level the officiating, the less technical stuff they're willing to call.

BTW, welcome to the group!

Well, at least PART of this point may be that the kids playing on TV are often put up as roll models. Kids playing in high school and further down the chain WANT to emulate this behavior and these techniques...is it really any wonder that they look at US with distain when we don't let them do it?

OK, i know we just don't call these levels the same way, but this is a highly visible and critical part of the game. We make it "fair" just so those big shot D-1 coaches won't yell at us and black-ball us from the playoff list? Please. "Don't worry son, just do it legally now, and when you get up to college, you can cheat all you want as long as you are fair about it and don't cheat any more than your opponent."

The camera seemed to show both leaning in on every faceoff. I guess it goes to more of an advantage/disadvantage. What is frusrating is getting those COC e-mails addressing this subject and seeing the top officails in the game not do anything about it. I mentioned this yesterday at our chapter's get together. The veterans all attributed it to keeping the coaches happy and trying to assure a future assignment.

Wait, are you talking about faceoffs or crosscheck holds? :chuckle:

I think he's talking about my favorite things... Referees interpruting the rules on their own accord..... Hmm... Will it be the same next week?

He's joking, right? Does he have a clue about the problems that the coaches that write the rules cause when they plow ahead with bone-headed rules language and then leave it to officials to figure out how to call them? Or better yet, omit even the slightest hint about the reasoning behind some of these knuckleheaded rules (and omitted rules) that pull down our game? That IS a joke. When was the last time you saw a coach at an officials meeting explaining how the rules should be interpreted? They don't know what color the cover of the rulebook is, much less understand whats inside it...
