The wording in this section is a little confusing to me.

...a penalty...is called against someone other than a player in the game, the official shall select the in-home and assess the penalty time.

When the person committing the foul is a substitue, the foul shall be assessed against him in so far as the record is concerned and he may only re-enter the game subject to the same restrictions he would be under if he were a legal player on the field at the time the foul was committed...

Does this mean that if A11, on the bench, committs a foul-the in home serves the penalty time and A11 cannot re-enter the game until the in home is released? If so is also placed in the box to monitor his (potential) return to the game?

The in-home serves for that on-the-bench A11's boorish actions. A11 resides on the bench or nearby until in-home serves out his (a11's) penance.

sounds reasonable, thanks.

Another thing that this tells us is that A11 get's the foul recorded in his name even though he doesn't serve. If it's a personal, it counts toward the limit of 5. A USC counts toward the limit of 2. Otherwise the poor in-home could foul out or get ejected because his teammates are idiots.

That's why when I coached I always had a...less skilled, attackman as a starter. He was promptly replaced at the first opportunity. This stopped a few cases of one of my best players being in the box over the years. (I always disguised it with the fact that I want to get others a chance to take part in the opening hand shakes etc.)

And the players didn't catch on that you only wanted third-line attackmen to get a chance to participate in the handshakes and not middies or defensemen? :chuckle:

Really, I don't know how big a deal this is, since usually your attackmen aren't participating much when you're man down. And does it really make much difference having your first-, second-, and fourth-best attackmen out there instead of your first-, second-, and third-best?

I guess if you have a huge drop-off and your in-home sits a lot, then it might make sense. If not, you might miss an early scoring opportunity by having the substandard attackman start the game.

We had some pure athletes at attack and they were sometimes used to kill penalties. I never kicked myself for starting one of the other guys but, you definetly have to have the right player in there for the potential fast break off the opening faceoff.
